ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

In a world where everyone conforms and follows a proven formula for success, Trupanion deviates off the beaten tracks and offers pet owners a refreshing approach to protect their pets.

With per-incident deductibles starting at $0 and а price guarantee, Trupanion sets itself apart from the competition that implements the opposite.

It’s interesting to learn that Trupanion was founded in Canada in 2000 and it didn’t sell any of its policies in the US until 2007 when the company started using the American Pet Insurance Company as their underwriter.

Today, this pet insurance provider, headquartered in Seattle, Washington, is one of the most prominent companies in the industry, raising capital from public investors on the stock market.

Simple, transparent, and upfront, are some of the many characteristics why pet parents decide to go for Trupanion. By and large, the company enjoys a positive reputation among its customers, and this good standing is what warrants its constant growth.

Given that, is Trupanion the right fit for your pet? Will it always be gentle to your wallet or should you expect a spike in costs as the years get by? We’ve covered all those little technicalities in this Trupanion pet insurance review so you’re set with all the information before making the final decision.

Trupanion’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: American Pet Insurance Company
    • AM Best Rating: Unrated
    • BBB Rating: A
  2. Exam period: Trupanion doesn’t require your pet to go through a veterinary exam prior to enrollment. However, they’d claim access to its previous medical records to determine how far your coverage can extend;
  3. Increase in monthly premium: Trupanion is one of the very few companies that put a price lock on your pet’s age. That means that the pricing on your monthly premium will remain the same as when you first signed up with the provider and won’t increase over the years because of your pet’s age. It might increase due to change in veterinary costs in your area though;
  4. Claim submission time limit: You must submit your claims within 90 days from the moment of the veterinary visit/procedure via email, app, online portal, mail, or fax;
  5. Claim processing times: Trupanion allows 60 days to process your submitted claims and will do so after all of the necessary documents are provided. However, this time is much lower and averages on about 14 days;
  6. Waiting periods: This is where Trupanion falls a bit behind the competition. Its waiting period for accidents is quite acceptable, but that for illnesses is quite high. Orthopedic conditions, however, are also decently placed on the waiting timeline:
    • Accidents – 5 days;
    • Illnesses – 30 days;
    • Wellness – N/A;
    • Cruciate ligament instances – 30 days.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with Trupanion is valid all across the US, but would also be applicable if you take your pet with you on a trip to Canada and Puerto Rico as well;
  8. Bilateral conditions are covered with Trupanion. This is another huge plus for the insurer since it’s a benefit you don’t get to enjoy with every company.

Trupanion’s Insurance Plans

Unlike other major pet insurers who offer several tiers of insurance coverage, Trupanion offers one simple plan that is equivalent to what others would usually label as “premium”, “pro”, ”or elite”.

Trupanion ensures to include everything that’s important for your pet’s needs and wellbeing in their coverage. Every unexpected illness and injury will enter your policy, with the exception of pre-existing conditions which we’ll take a look at below.

To arm yourself with the best Trupanion protection, all you have to do is request a quote, either online or through a phone call. After providing the necessary information about your pet, you’ll be presented with the following options that you can choose from:

  • Annual and lifetime payout limits: Unlimited;
  • Per-incident deductibles: $0 and $50 – $1,000;
  • Reimbursement percentages: 90%.

Let’s explain what all of the above means. There are absolutely no limits to how much reimbursement you can receive on any of your claims, whether it’s on an annual or a lifetime level. Other companies usually cap claim payouts at $10,000 per year.

Another major difference is Trupanion’s approach to deductibles. They believe that they should charge you a deductible only once per each unique incident. That means that if your pet gets diabetes, for example, you’ll only pay your chosen deductible for the first claim that you submit related to that illness, and you’re done with that cost for life.

You can choose between a $0 deductible or anywhere from $50 to $1,000. That’s the only factor you can toggle with that can affect the price of your monthly premium.

Reimbursement is always fixed at 90%. Most other companies offer lower reimbursement options (60%, 70%, 80%) in turn for a lower premium, but remember that if you opt for any of those, your copayment will be much higher.

What’s Covered With a Trupanion’s Policy

In a nutshell, Trupanion covers all unexpected illnesses and injuries that may affect your pet’s health and wellbeing. Their beliefs are tied with providing pets with what they deserve the best, and that would be a most comprehensive insurance coverage.

These are only some of the most important accidents and illnesses that come included with a Trupanion policy:

  • Accidents – poisoning, ingestion of foreign material, trauma and fractures, bites, bruises, burns, car accidents, ligament tears and ruptures, etc;
  • Hereditary conditions – elbow and hip dysplasia, diabetes, upper respiratory infections, thyroid disease, luxating patella, glaucoma, and more;
  • Congenital conditions – heart disease, nervous system issues, cataracts, liver disease, and more;
  • Unidentified issues – vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, loss of appetite, and change in weight;
  • Chronic conditions – arthritis, asthma, allergies, epilepsy, and more
  • Dental issues – tooth extractions, developmental abnormalities, gum disease, periodontitis, and more;
  • Prescription medications;
  • Veterinary supplements, herbal therapy,  and vitamins;
  • Surgeries, anesthesia, and hospital stays;
  • Diagnostic tests – blood work, X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, and MRIs;
  • Prosthetic devices and carts;

What’s Excluded From Trupanion’s Coverage

Below, we are listing all of the instances that aren’t included with a Trupanion pet insurance policy:

  • Pre-existing conditions – any injury or illness that occurred within 18 months before enrolling with Trupanion, or within the waiting period after enrolling;
  • Exam fees;
  • Taxes, administrative, and shipping costs;
  • Illnesses and injuries that are a result of your own reckless behavior;
  • Cosmetic and elective procedures: tail docking, declawing, ear cropping, microchipping, and more;
  • Transportation costs;
  • Anal gland expression;
  • Grooming, nail trimming, ear cleaning, toys, walking equipment, bedding, and housing supplies;
  • Injuries resulting from training activities, racing, and fighting;
  • Cloning;
  • Spaying/neutering;
  • Parasite prevention and treatment.

Trupanion’s Wellness Plans

This is another aspect where Trupanion diverges from the usual formula. They don’t offer a pet wellness option saying that it wouldn’t be fair to charge a customer for something that’ll be more affordable for them to pay on their own.

Pet preventive care is something you always plan ahead, so you can save the exact amount of money that you need to pay your vet, instead of paying the same but also giving away money to a middle man that can do the same job as you would.

Trupanion’s core mission is to protect pets and their owners from the unexpected. Emergency situations are what hits the wallet the hardest and having the peace of mind that you’re covered can be invaluable.

Extra Features

To make things more well-rounded, Trupanion offers several options, one of which is free to use. These features are optional and can provide value only if you think they can be beneficial to you or your pet.

Recovery and Complementary Care

In addition to the core Trupanion policy, your pet can have even more protection with our Recovery and Complementary Care package. This provides coverage for alternative treatments that go above and beyond normal veterinary medicine.

It’s important to understand that pets, just like humans, often need time to heal and recover after a more serious illness or injury. If you care about this aspect of their wellbeing, you can take a look into Trupanion’s Recovery and Complementary Care package.

It’s a healthcare plan that you can add to your core Trupanion policy, only within the first 30 days of your enrollment with the pet insurer.

Here’s what comes included on the plan:

  • Acupuncture – healing body parts by the insertion of specialized needles;
  • Behavioral modification – systemic training sessions to change how your pet behaves in certain situations or towards people, objects, and other animals;
  • Chiropractic treatment – manual therapy adjusting the skeletal system and manipulating the spine in order to enhance healing;
  • Hydrotherapy – aiding the healing process with exercises practiced with the use of water;
  • Rehabilitative therapy – improving your pet’s health conditions after trauma, illness, or surgery by using proven therapeutic methods;
  • Naturopathy – healing through treatments that don’t involve drugs (for example: water, air, electrotherapy, herbs, etc.);
  • Homeopathy – using natural solutions and substances that trigger a positive effect on the rehabilitative process in the animal.

Pet Owner Assistance

If you want the ultimate protection for you and your pet even outside the veterinary clinic, the Pet Owner Assistance package might be a good deal for you.

With it, you can get coverage for pet emergencies that affect your personal and professional plan, as well as instances regarding your pet condition that often come with a hefty price tag.

Let’s review what’s on this package:

  • Liability coverage for property damage to third parties – whenever your pet’s actions are the cause of unintentional property damage that you need to compensate for, Turpanion can instead pay for you. The payout limit is $25,000;
  • Boarding fees – in case you need to be hospitalized for more than 4 days, Trupanion can pay the kennel or cattery fees for boarding your dog or cat, for up to $25 per day or up to $500 in total;
  • Advertising and reward for lost or stolen pet – the company can reimburse you with up to $500 for advertising your lost or stolen pet, including any offered rewards given for its return;
  • Costs for vacation/holiday cancelation – If your travel plans are interrupted by an emergency regarding your pet, Trupanion can cover up to $1,000 of your expenses for travel and accommodation. Note that this is valid only up to 7 days before your vacation start date, or while you’re on it;
  • Burial or cremation – If your pet’s death is a result of an accident, Trupanion will cover up to $100 for the burial or cremation costs.

Breeding Rider

Trupanion and Petplan are currently the only two pet insurance companies that provide coverage for injuries and illnesses related to pregnancy, breeding, queening, and whelping.

If you’re concerned about your pet having any future health problems related to breeding or pregnancy, or if you plan to own a pet for breeding purposes, this rider might be a great addition to your core insurance policy.

One great example are French bulldogs. They are often associated with complicated and risky whelping, so they are always recommended for a C-section. This plan will have you covered for that procedure.

Just like with normal coverage, anything that is planned or expected to be treated in advance is not covered.

The list of exclusions is as follows:

  • All caesarian births that aren’t medically necessary;
  • Routine pregnancy tests;
  • Pre-breeding examinations;
  • Treating infertility;
  • Artificial insemination.

Trupanion’s Pricing Quotes

Pet Insurance by Trupanion featuring a woman laughing and petting a dog

Above, we’ve had the chance to review everything that’s offered by Trupanion. We’ve noticed that their top-notch coverage is of a gold standard, and everything that’s “premium” in life comes with a higher price tag attached.

With higher prices than the competition, Trupanion is still worthy of your consideration. If you think that your family should receive the best healthcare available no matter the cost, remember that your pets are also an inseparable part of that family.

The best thing about Trupanion regarding their prices is the price lock they put on every enrolled pet. With this price guarantee, you can be sure that your monthly premium will have the same price, even when your pet turns 16 and you’ve enrolled them only when they were 3 months old.

The only way for your monthly premium to increase, which will probably for a bit, is if the prices of veterinary care in your area increase over time.

Discounts and Savings

Except for the 30-day money-back guarantee, Trupanion doesn’t offer any discount or savings options. There are no available discounts for enrolling multiple pets either.

The only thing that we’ve noticed on their website is that they have an agreement with some veterinarians that offer Trupanion’s insurance for a free 30-day period. You can use the full benefits of a Trupanion’s policy during this period for free, with a $250 deductible if you decide to submit any claims. Talk to your veterinarian to understand if they provide any Trupanion offers.

Trupanion vs. Prudent Pet

Prudent Pet is one of the top-rated pet insurance companies currently on the market. The coverage this provider offers is all-encapsulating, including even alternative and behavioral therapies. However, if you want more benefits, the price of your monthly premium won’t be on the cheaper side.

Customer Reviews

We’ve done our best to test every feature that Trupanion offers and provide our unbiased insight. However, we honestly admit that’s never a match for looking for real users’ testimonies and reading their personal experiences with Trupanion.

For your convenience, we included several positive and negative customer reviews, so you can take a look at individual stories and compare them to your unique situation.

Positive Trupanion Pet Insurance Reviews

Customer service reps have always been very kind, polite, and helpful. I can find a lot of my answers on the website but it is still very nice to be able to speak with someone when you have a question or issues you want or need clarification on. Any rep I have ever spoken with has gone above and beyond to assist me. Thank you for having great customer service because it truly does make a difference.

Carrie Harbin

We have been a Trupanion family since 2012 when my Vet recommended Trupanion to us. With 2 inquisitive pups, we knew that stuff would “happen”. Over the years, we have used our insurance for an emergency and for ongoing anxiety issues with our fur kids. Trupanion has always promptly paid the claims and their customer service is excellent! Can’t say enough good about them.

Mary Kay Lantz

Once again, Trupanion came through when my cat Tulip had an emergency situation. She was treated at a couple of places, and is now home and recuperating! I made the claim right away, and Trupanion reimbursed me within a week. They were an absolute lifesaver in 2017 when my frenchie had to have emergency surgery. They worked directly with the hospital which was a great help! I’ve been with Trupanion for years, and simply wouldn’t go anywhere else.

Liz

Don’t think twice about insuring your pet with Trupanion. They are the best company to deal with. Our dog Niko has a heart condition and because of Trupanion and their support, we’ve been able to provide him with the best medical care and medicine to prolong his life. They pay claims online within days. On my last claim, I had my money in my bank account in 2 days! The most impressive thing about Trupanion is that they really care about my pets. They treat them like their own. They have the best customer experience of any company I’ve ever dealt with. I will never leave them. They are like family.

Negative Trupanion Pet Insurance Reviews

Although Trupanion offers a great service, their constant and significant price increases for pet insurance is quite counterintuitive to their mission i.e. “to help the pets we all love get the veterinary care they need” and their vision i.e. “to create a better quality of life for people and their pets”. Just a reminder, to achieve this mission and vision, you must keep your rates affordable. A 100% increase in rates in one year is not conducive to your mission and vision. For those considering Trupanion, please be advised that they constantly increase their rates once you’ve signed on.

Francois Bastien

I signed up with a 1000$ deductible at a lower monthly premium, I have no claims and my puppy just turned one and they raised my premium by almost 30%. I understand premiums going up but that is ridiculous and I can’t lower the deductible either which I was aware of but didn’t realize my premiums would go up that much so now I’m concerned for next year, at least I can cancel but if I put that money aside monthly I think it might be a better idea. Like most insurance companies they are out to make money.

Billie M

They used to be great but since Covid, I’ve noticed a downturn in their willingness to cover what should be covered. I.E. the last surgery my dog had they removed 4 skin tumors in ONE procedure, under ONE anesthetic, but Trupanion broke it down into 4 different categories because of the types of tissue they were thus making me meet FOUR different deductibles and at the end of the day they covered ZERO dollars from an $800+ bill. Absolutely ridiculous.

I will probably cancel at this point because I’d be better off putting $140 a month in an envelope.

Rob

Conclusion

To sum up, Trupanion is most suitable for those who really care about their pets’ future, every step of the way. It’s costlier than most other pet insurance options, but definitely more reliable, trustworthy, and always on hand.

One of the best reasons why we’re such suckers for Trupanion is their price lock on premium’s increase. The fact that your pet is getting older with the years and more susceptible to illnesses and injuries doesn’t play any role in increasing the price of your monthly premium, any time you renew your policy.

The lack of a wellness plan shouldn’t be a dealbreaker. You can always choose a standalone option from another provider, like Nationwide, or save the money for planned procedures in a savings account.

If you can’t get past Trupanion’s price point, you can always browse ProtectMyPaws for a vast list of other alternatives that can better suit your situation.

Trupanion Alternatives

For everyone interested in a full-fledged wellness plan, there’s Vital Care by Petco. It offers more than what other companies would, including free bags of pet food, unlimited preventative exams, grooming services, vaccines, and much more. On top of everything, you can collect monthly point rewards and use them to get more complimentary benefits.

Price-wise, Hartville might be a much better alternative than Trupanion. Their accident and illness coverage is quite affordable if you enroll with the company while your pet is still a youngster. Additionally, they have an unlimited benefits option, an accident-only plan, and a low deductible option.

Pumpkin is also amazing in the above-mentioned regard. They are budget-friendly, reinstate curable pre-existing conditions, and provide data analysis tools to help you predict future medical conditions that might affect your pet. To make things even better, Pumpkin regularly donates to animal charities with every policy they sell.

F.A.Q.

What happens with my Trupanion policy if I give my pet away or if I change ownership?

The change of ownership can be seamlessly transferred between you and a new owner. Trupanion will need to contact both of you so it can verify the transfer and update the billing and account information.

Can I sign up with Trupanion if I feed my pet a raw diet?

Absolutely. Your choice of diet that you use for your pet doesn’t affect your eligibility with Trupanion in any way. However, Trupanion offers coverage for prescribed pet diets that don’t include raw diets.

Can I change the amount of my deductible? If so, how can I do it?

If you want to increase your deductible in order to lower the price of your monthly premium, you can do so at any moment. Lowering the deductible is only possible within 30 days from your enrollment date.

Am I obliged to file a claim for every veterinary treatment, even for those that cost less than my deductible?

You’re not obligated to claim every veterinary treatment, but we strongly recommend that you do so, even when your vet bill is lower than your deductible. That way, your deductible will be paid for the treated condition and will stay paid for life, so the next time you have unexpected medical expenses for the same condition, you’ll have your deductible taken care of.
