More info

ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

PetPremium was founded in 2013 with the drive to educate pet owners on the best practices to keep their pets the healthiest and the happiest. PX, a company specializing in customer acquisition, launched PetPremium so they can further fortify pet care with reliable pet insurance options.

Headquartered in New York City, PetPremium is available to pet parents all across the United States. Besides their highly customizable accident and illness pet coverage policy, the insurer provides accident-only and preventive care solutions as well.

Some of the best aspects of acquiring a PetPremium pet insurance policy for your canine or feline companion include:

  • Transparency regarding both prices and information;
  • Reliable coverage;
  • Straightforward claim filing process;
  • No hidden exclusions;
  • An in-depth knowledge base on pet breeds, care, nutrition, training, grooming, and behavior;
  • Available at any licensed vet.

PetPremium’s team puts the wellbeing of each pet at the forefront so they can always be ready to acknowledge what cats and dogs (and their loving families) face every time they get sick or injured.

In this PetPremium pet insurance review, we’ll dig deeper to better understand all of the above-mentioned aspects. We’ll learn all about the company’s pet coverage options, their prices, exclusions, customer service, and much more.

PetPremium’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: United States Fire Insurance Company
    • AM Best Rating: A
    • BBB Rating: A+
  2. Exam period: PetPremium doesn’t obligate you to take a mandatory veterinary exam for your pet in order to become eligible for their pet coverage. However, the company will use your pet’s current or previous medical history records to identify any pre-existing conditions and not include them in your pet insurance policy.
  3. Increase in monthly premium: PetPremium will increase the price of your policy premium so they could maintain reliable coverage whenever you need it. Pet insurance companies need to adapt to the rise of veterinary costs (especially in upscale urban areas) in order to be able to reimburse whenever you need it. The age of your pet factors in this aspect of pet insurance as well.
  4. Claim submission time limit: PetPremium accepts claims for veterinary treatments or visits that happened up to 270 days at most. If you breach this timeframe, PetPremium reserves the right to dismiss your claim.
  5. Claim processing times: PetPremium will work tirelessly until your claims are successfully resolved. If you have submitted every necessary document, the pet insurer will process your claim as soon as possible and make sure that’s done within 30 days from the date of your filing, although the average claim processing time is around 15 days. Any delays might sometimes occur, depending on how fast your veterinarian’s response is, in case they need to contact them. To track the status of your claim process, you can access your account in the Member Center.
  6. Waiting periods: One of the best suits of PetPremium is the lack of a  waiting period for accidents and pet wellness care. The policy for these types of pet coverage goes into full effect the day after you enroll in any related plan. The illness waiting period is a standard one, similarly to most pet insurance companies, and it’s 14 days. The same goes for orthopedic conditions such as cruciate ligament issues and knee conditions:
    • Accidents – 1 day;
    • Illnesses – 14 days;
    • Wellness – 1 day;
    • Orthopedic conditions – 14 days.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with PetPremium is valid with any licensed veterinary clinic across all 50 states in the United States, with the extension to specialty and emergency clinics as well. If you decide to travel to Canada and take your pet with you, you can follow the same practice as if you were in the US and file a claim with PetPremium which will cover your vet bills all the same.
  8. Bilateral conditions such as conditions that affect the knee’s soft tissue and cruciate ligaments (Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL), Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL), Medial Patella Luxation (MPL), Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL), Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)) won’t be covered if they occur within the waiting period or before the policy’s effective date.

PetPremium’s Insurance Plans

PetPremium offers two types of pet insurance plans – Total Coverage℠ (coverage of all unexpected accidents and illnesses) and Accident-Only coverage (taking care of medical costs related to accidents and injuries including alternative therapies).

In this section, we’ll lay out all of the important details that characterize both plans.

First, let’s talk about the customizability of PetPremium’s policy. After some thorough research, we can testify that their claim limit options provide notable flexibility that you can use to adapt the price of the policy premium to suit your budget as best as possible.

Here’s what you can choose from when building your PetPremium pet insurance policy. All of the options are valid both for the Accident-Only coverage plan and the Total Coverage℠ plan:

  • Annual benefit amounts: $2,500, $3,000, $4,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, and Unlimited;
  • Annual deductibles: $100, $250, and $500;
  • Reimbursement percentages: 70%, 80%, and 90%.

Regarding waiting periods, there are none on the Accident-Only coverage plan which is a great headstart for PetPremium considering the fierce competition in the ever-growing pet insurance marketplace. Illnesses have a waiting period of 14 days, and so do orthopedic conditions.

Another positive aspect of the Accident-Only coverage plan is that it doesn’t have an upper age restriction for all pets, unlike the Total Coverage℠ plan where dogs above the age of 12 and cats above the age of 14 can’t enroll. All plans have a lower age restriction that’s 8 weeks of age for all pets.

Ultimately, all of PetPremium’s pet insurance plans are valid anywhere in the United States and Canada. Wherever you travel across all of the USA’s 50 states or Canada, you can visit any licensed veterinarian clinic, specialty, or emergency clinic and file a claim for your medical expenses.

What’s Covered With a PetPremium Policy

The list of covered conditions on PetPremium’s Accident-Only and Total Coverage℠ plans is undoubtedly vast. The main thing to remember is that pre-existing conditions and everything that’s expected and planned ahead isn’t covered. The rest almost always is.

To have a better notion of what’s covered, here, we’ll mention some of the most important instances that come included with your PetPremium pet insurance policy.

Accident-Only Coverage Plan

This plan covers unexpected accidents and injuries. But, there’s more to it. Review the following list to find out what’s really included in it:

  • Accidents –  ingestion of foreign solid objects, poisoning and consultation fees for poison control, bone fractures and facial and bodily trauma, car accidents, lacerations, wounds and bruises as a result of bites, cuts, and burns, sprains and tears, and much more;
  • Surgery and hospital stays – in-office operations, hospitalizations, rehabilitative care, and more;
  • Accidental dental procedures – tooth extraction as a result of accidental dental or facial trauma;
  • Prescription medications – FDA-approved drugs prescribed by a veterinarian in order to treat injuries and used in rehabilitative processes;
  • Medical supplies – band-aids, bandages, splints, casts, and much more;
  • Alternative therapies – a holistic approach to veterinary treatments including cold laser therapy, stem cell therapy, acupuncture, cryotherapy, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and more.

Total Coverage℠ Plan

Everything coming with the Accident_only plan is also included in the Total Coverage℠ Plan with the addition of coverage for unexpected illnesses, hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, and much more.

Besides the above-mentioned instances in the previous section, the Total Coverage℠ Plan covers the following items:

  • Illnesses – skin issues, diarrhea, vomiting, heartworm, infections of the urinary tract, bladder, or kidneys, eye, nasal, or ear problems, intestinal or other types of parasites, and many more;
  • Chronic conditions – diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, epilepsy, allergies, and more;
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions – disorders of the nervous system, elbow and hip dysplasia, disorders of the knee tissue and ligaments, respiratory defects, liver disease, thyroid disease, cataracts, glaucoma, and many more;
  • Cancer treatments – radiation therapy and chemotherapy;
  • Behavioral therapies – training and treatments for aggression, separation anxiety, depression, fur pulling, tail chasing, excessive salivating and licking, phobias, uncontrolled chewing, and more;
  • Dental coverage – non-routine dental procedures, dental diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis, and more;
  • Prescription medications – FDA-approved medications used to treat an injury or illnesses that are covered by PetPremium’s policy;
  • Diagnostic and laboratory procedures – test for a blood panel, ultrasound, CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, urinalysis, hematology, and more;
  • End-of-life expenses – euthanasia that’s recommended by a veterinarian and costs for burial and cremation.

What’s Excluded From PetPremium’s Coverage

Every company implements a number of policies to protect its assets from liabilities. Pet insurance companies, including PetPremium, impose exclusions in their coverage.

Our most honest advice would be to always be in the clear about what’s excluded from your pet insurance policy so you can plan upfront about the healthcare options for your pet.

Here’s what PetPremium excludes from their pet insurance policy:

  • Inhumane treatment – cosmetic and elective procedures such as claw removal, eyelash removal, tail docking, elective gastropexy, dental cosmetics, anal gland expression, spaying/neutering, ear cropping, and more;
  • Pre-existing conditions – every condition that occurs before your pet enrolls with PetPremium or while the waiting period is ongoing;
  • Dental treatments of cosmetic, endodontic, aesthetic, or orthodontic nature such as crowns, fillings, caps, root canals, planning, implants, and similar services;
  • Routine and preventative care treatments such as vaccinations, microchipping, deworming, dental cleanings, and similar procedures;
  • Grooming, bathing, and grooming supplies;
  • Breeding, pregnancy, whelping, and nursing;
  • Experimental treatments, cloning, and organ transplantations;
  • Funeral services including memorials, urns, caskets, etc.

You should also note that after 180 days of your pet going symptom-free for a pre-existing condition they previously had, PetPremium will include that condition in the coverable conditions in your pet insurance policy.

PetPremium’s Wellness Plans

PetPremium pet insurance wellness care featuring a woman hugging a dog in nature

PetPremium offers two plans optimized to cover major routine necessities for your furry companions – the Routine and Advanced preventive care plans.

Both plans will enable you to complete the healthcare package for your cat or dog, although the Advanced preventive care plan offers more benefits.

The two plans work on a benefits schedule which means that each benefit that comes with them has a fixed amount of annual limit that you can top.

The following chart explains which benefits come with the Routine and Advanced preventive care plans:

Annual Benefits Routine Preventative Care Advanced Preventative Care
Dental Cleaning (or Spaying/Neutering for the Advanced plan)$100$150
Wellness Exam$50$50
Deworming$20$25
Health Certificate$0$25
Flea/Heartworm Prevention$0$25
DHLPP Vaccine/Titer (Dogs), FVRCP Vaccine/Titer (Cats)$20$25
Rabies Vaccine/Titer or Lyme Vaccine/Titer (Dogs), Rabies Vaccine/Titer or FIP Vaccine/Titer (Cats)$20$25
Bordetella Vaccine/Titer (Dogs), FELV Vaccine/Titer (Cats)$0$25
Fecal Test$20$25
Heartworm Test$20$25
Blood Test$0$25
Urinalysis$0$25
Total Annual Benefit$250$450

Acquiring such a plan should be every pet parent’s priority since the best way to look after your pet is to prevent any illness or injury from happening.

The Routine preventive care plan costs $9.95/month and the Advanced preventive care plan costs $24.95/month. These prices are fixed and are valid no matter what type of pet you have; all pet breeds, genders, ages, sizes, and locations are permitted to enroll.

You should also note that your base coverage deductible and copayment options aren’t required on these plans.

Extra Features – PetPremium’s Knowledgebase

PetPremium’s knowledgebase is probably the most extensive learning space on all things pets we’ve ever encountered with a pet insurance provider.

The company dedicates an entire section to useful articles that help pet parents properly raise their pet children.

There, you can discover articles on the following topics:

  • Dogs and cats breeds – all of the known cat and dogs breeds are properly classified with added information about each specific breed, its characteristics, what makes them special for pet owners, who they are best for, and how to best take care of them;
  • Pet training articles – what signs should you look for when assessing your pet’s behavior, when to seek help, and training tips on how to properly instruct them;
  • Pet grooming articles – everything from shaving, bathing, nail trimming, brushing your cat or dog including recommendations for grooming supplies;
  • Pet nutrition articles – advice on how to feed your pet, which foods are good or bad for them, how to prepare homemade pet food, specialized diets to treat certain conditions, etc.;

Whenever you have to address an issue or simply have some extra time, you can access this knowledgebase and educate yourself on how to become a better pet owner.

PetPremium’s Pricing Quotes

PetPremium is probably the only pet insurance company that doesn’t offer online quote generation to its customers. And that’s an immense drawback. Not being able to pull a free quote within the timeframe when a visitor goes around PetPremium’s website can trigger a fast withdrawal and an incentive to look for a solution elsewhere.

However, we were able to contact PetPremium and acquire sample quotes for the purposes of this review. We opted for a quick evaluation over the premium prices for a 3-year-old cat and dog of mixed breed and medium size.

Throughout our research, we discovered that PetPremium’s pet coverage premium prices are quite affordable for pets of mixed breeds. Pure breeds, as is the case with all pet insurance providers, tend to have higher premiums.

Nevertheless, you can use the flexibility of PetPremium’s plans and choose your own deductible, annual benefit limit, and reimbursement level to adjust the price of your premium to suit your financial standing.

Note that as your pet grows older, so will your premium price. Pet insurers initiate this practice to keep up with the rise in veterinary costs and also the risks that your pet has as they progress through life.

Discounts and Savings

PetPremium has a 10% multi-pet discount for everyone who decides to sign up an additional pet with them. That means that you should first discover which one of your pets has the highest premium and sign up that pet as an additional one so you can benefit the most out of your discount.

Since PetPremium charges a $1.50 fee on each monthly transaction, if you opt for annual billing, you can avoid this fee and save $18 annually.

Lastly, there’s the 30-day money-back guarantee. PetPremium offers this feature so everyone can try their service for a month, and if they aren’t satisfied for any reason, they can cancel within the 30-day timeframe and get the money for their initial payment refunded in full. Customers should note that they can use this benefit only if they don’t submit any claims during the first 30 days of enrollment.

How Does PetPremium Compare With Its Competitors?

By now, you might have learned that there are dozens of pet insurance companies that offer the same, core pet coverage options that take care of the medical expenses you encounter to keep your pet’s health in check. But, these companies also differ in price, quality of service, coverage scope, and more additional details.

That’s why, in this section, we’ll put PetPremium against three other pet insurance providers that are all unique in their own regard. You can use the comparison charts below to see how PetPremium fares when compared to Prudent Pet, Figo, and Petplan. You might even discover that one of them could be more suitable for your needs, so you can explore them further.

PetPremium vs. Prudent Pet

Prudent Pet is one of the more expensive options on the market concerning pet insurance. However, they are considered highly reliable and some online reviewing websites rank them at the top of the niche.

The company also has an unlimited annual benefits option, boasts a short waiting period for accidents, and doesn’t impose upper age restrictions for cats and dogs.

PetPremium vs. Figo

With Figo, you can choose to have the full cost of your vet bills reimbursed back to you. Only a small number of pet insurance companies offer this benefit. They can help you provide health care for your pet no matter where you are at the moment (anywhere in the world).

Figo’s waiting period for accidents is the same as PetPremium (1 day), but when it comes to enrollment fees, Figo are at a disadvantage – they impose a one-time $15 entry fee.

PetPremium vs. Petplan

Petplan throws a bunch of extra fees at no extra charge on top of their base pet coverage options. Coverage for veterinary exam fees, a 24/7 televet service, and extra benefits such as coverage for boarding fees, vacation cancellation, and costs for advertising for stolen pets are simply included with your pet insurance policy.

While Petplan doesn’t offer a multi-pet discount, they have discounts for healthy pets which entail a 15%-30% discount on a full year of premiums if you go claim-free for an entire policy period.

Customer Service

We’ve arrived at the worst aspect of PetPremium – their customer service approach.

To begin with, their website needs a serious revamp. It seems cluttered with dissociated information that’s repetitive and inaccurately formated. The website navigation is unintuitive itself, lacking basic website design principles.

The company hasn’t implemented smartphone apps for Android and iOS yet even though it’s not that new to the market. This is a huge drawback since most other pet insurance companies have this solution well-established.

Other than that, PetPremium uses most of the standard communication channels that you can use to get in touch with a member of their representatives.

The following are their contact information:

  • Phone:
    (800) 935-7280
  • Email:
    support@petpremium.com
  • Mailing Address:
    44 Wall St., Suite 505
    New York, New York 10015

PetPremium’s operating hours aren’t made available on their website.

Customer Reviews

Our mission is to always provide our readers with correct, unbiased information so they can be prepared and sure of what they get into if they decide to sign up for a pet insurance plan.

That’s where real customers come in. Voicing their opinions about their personal experience is a must in each of our reviews. Reading them can complete the picture you have about a particular service and help you make a better decision.

This section provides just that. Some crucial positive and negative experiences about PetPremium. Read on to find out what their policyholders have to say.

Positive PetPremium Pet Insurance Reviews

Easy to complete and a lot of comprehensive information on their website. This is a great company if you see that they are really trying to help you make the best decisions for your pet. I am a new dog owner and after using PetPremium’s website I felt confident and informed enough to get a dog and buy the insurance with them.

Cynthia B.

I am thankful for the lack of age bias and no judgment for not selecting a wellness plan. The enrollment process is straightforward and fast. I hope I don’t have to use the insurance, but I take comfort in knowing I can get care for my cats when they need it!

Lynette S.

Their service is great! Of course, I had a lot of questions but they were able to answer all of them. Getting insurance is never easy, but PetPremium is as close as it gets to an easy process. Also, I compared a lot of quotes but PetPremium was the cheapest for what you get. I went with the Level 2 plan for my Labrador Buddy. Definitely recommend PetPremium.

Dan G.

Quick and easy process, with good coverage and benefits for what I want. Hopefully, all claims are as easy and painless as the signup was.

Megan W.

Process online was very easy and when I called to see when I would receive the policy in the mail, the person I talked to was very friendly and informative.

Cathy M.

The online enrollment process was very easy and completely transparent. I also got my initial free quote delivered to my email address as well. If you choose you can get everything sent to you in an email so that cuts down on all the paperwork. With the 30-day money-back guarantee, it looks like the best way to try them out. I did and feel comfortable with the idea my pet is now covered by PetPremium for those big ugly bills.

Daisy L.

Negative PetPremium Pet Insurance Reviews

I have been paying pet insurance with PetPremium for 4 years now. For the first time ever, I really needed to use it as my dog was diagnosed with Mast Cell Tumors. He had surgery, I submitted a bill for the line item for the removal, $954, and I was only reimbursed $278!!!! $135 per tumor?! They told me the rate of the cost by the area I live in, appealing won’t help, and talking to the supervisor won’t help. I am stunned!!! For all the money I paid and for removing cancerous tumors, they failed me! Completely disgusted.

TL R.

Insurance products are a bait and switch. Submitted an estimate for TPLO surgery for my golden retriever and received a response of the covered amount. When I proceeded with surgery, PetPremium covered $2,000 less than their estimate. The staff and supervisors were not helpful. The company’s name only gets it half right. They do not care about your pets, just your premiums.

Jim M.

Unable to go back COMPLETELY to correct an error. I’m upset about the $1.50 per payment charge even though I paid in full.

Tom C.

Buyer beware! The policy has a clause that allows them to only pay what they claim is customary charges. These charges are not transparent so instead of a 90% policy you really get a 60% of coverage. This allows them to pay very little of the actual claim. Stay Away! $1488 claim, they only paid $574.

Rick G.

Conclusion

To wrap things up with this PetPremium pet insurance review, we have to say that PetPremiums pet insurance coverage is as good as it gets. They offer the standard base coverage with benefits like alternative therapies, dental coverage, and behavioral therapies. However, enrolling as a future policy holder seems like a hurdle considering you cannot fetch a quote online.

It’s noteworthy that PetPremium’s coverage plans include an immense amount of annual benefit options, a very decent accident-only pet insurance alternative, and two pet wellness care plans that have flat, affordable premiums.

One of the best assets of PetPremium is their online knowledgebase on all things pet. It contains an extensive collection of articles on pet care, pet training, pet nutrition, pet grooming, and elaborations on all cat and dog breeds.

Good luck on your PetPremium adventure if you decide to opt for one of their pet coverage plans. If you’re still undecided, ProtectMyPaws can help you discover other solutions that can potentially be a better match for your budget and your pet’s needs.

PetPremium’s Alternatives

We’re presenting three alternative options for PetPremium below:

Lemonade is a pet insurer that, like PetPremium, offers an unlimited annual benefit option. Their accident and illness pet coverage plan is a comprehensive one and they even have pet wellness care options that don’t fall far behind. With the amazing discount options that Lemonade provides, every customer can lower their policy premium to enjoy an affordable pet insurance solution. The entire Lemonade experience is aided by the latest technologies so things are more accessible and transparent.

Trupanion is on this list as well since they are a unique pet insurance solution. They provide full reimbursement of all of your coverable medical expenses and include a ton of conditions and extra clauses to make your policy the most compact protection for your bank account. While Trupanion’s waiting periods and annual benefits are conveniently constructed, their deductibles follow a per-incident system, meaning you’ll have to pay your chosen deductible every time your pet undergoes a different procedure at the vet’s office.

If extra care options are what you’re after, Petplan will grant you many of those while covering your pet with some reliable accident and illness insurance. Benefits like vacation cancelation refund, covering costs for boarding your pet with a kennel or a cattery, advertising your stolen or stray pet and rewarding the founder are only some on the list that come at no extra charge. To add, Petplan doesn’t impose upper age restrictions for neither cats nor dogs, unlike PetPremium that does this to both species.

F.A.Q.

Does PetPremium cover euthanizing my dog as a recommendation by my veterinarian?

Yes. PetPremium covers necessary euthanasia as a result of a coverable illness or injury along with costs for burial or cremation. Note that euthanasia must be advised by a licensed veterinarian. Putting a pet away because of a pre-existing condition isn’t covered by PetPremium’s policy.

Does PetPremium limit the number of insurance claims during a policy period?

No, you can submit as many claims as you’re required to, even claims that concern medical expenses with a less value of your chosen deductible. Note that you need to submit your claims within 270 days of your pet’s veterinary visit or procedure.

How can I be reimbursed by PetPremium for my veterinary bills?

PetPremium supports repayment by a regular mail method which involves sending you a physical check that you can cash out at your bank (or any bank for that matter), or the preferable method of direct deposit where they repay you by directly sending money to your bank account.

I learned that PetPremium doesn’t accept pets above a certain age? Does that mean that my pet will get thrown out of their insurance policy when they become old?

Absolutely, not! After you enroll with PetPremium, your pet gets to keep their pet insurance policy forever, given that you regularly pay your policy premiums.
