Why you can trust us

More info

ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

Pet Assure is the oldest provider of pet care assistance in the US in an alternative way; they’ve been present in the industry since 1995. The company doesn’t offer pet insurance services, credit loans, nor emergency funds, but rather a savings package on all veterinary services at eligible vet clinics.

Pet Assure isn’t insurance, therefore, there aren’t any deductibles and copayments to meet. In order to become eligible for the Pet Assure savings program, your pet will not undergo any restrictive vetting process where it can be excluded on the basis of their breed, size, sex, age, and health condition.

Pets with pre-existing conditions, oral or gum issues, chronic and congenital conditions like arthritis, diabetes, allergies, or hip dysplasia can all benefit from the Pet Assure pet coverage program.

With Pet Assure, you still pay most of your vet bills, but you won’t be restricted nor denied assistance during any of your veterinary visits. All you need to do is apply your Pet Assure savings code at checkout.

What’s more, Pet Assure includes coverage for wellness and preventative veterinary procedures in their policy – something you almost never get with a traditional pet insurance company. Moreover, all types of pets, not only cats and dogs, are allowed to sign up on a Pet Assure coverage policy.

And that’s only scraping the surface. To learn everything up to the tiniest details, continue reading this Pet Assure pet coverage review.

Pet Assure Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: Pet Assure is simply a discount program used to offset some of the veterinary costs of pet owners. Since it is not an insurance company, it doesn’t have an underwriter, and therefore, isn’t rated by financial stability rating services.
    • AM Best Rating: N/A
    • BBB Rating: A+
  2. Exam period: There is no need for your pet to undergo a thorough physical exam so you can enroll them with one of the Pet Assure discount plans. Since Pet Assure is very liberal toward allowing pets with all kinds of pre-existing and hereditary conditions on their plans, they have no issue with their medical history.;
  3. Increase in monthly premium: Pet Assure doesn’t take into consideration your pet age whether you’re just enrolling with them or you’re on one of their plans for years. Your monthly fee will stay exactly as it was at the moment of your sign-up, forever. The state where you’re located is also unimportant – you’d get the same price wherever your address of residence is;
  4. Claim submission time limit: There’s no need to file any claims with Pet Assure before you’re ready to pay your share. You should simply show up at a veterinary clinic that participates in the Pet Assure program, present your Pet Assure pet coverage discount ID, and use their veterinary services at a discounted price;
  5. Claim processing times: Again, your Pet Assure ID code is the only thing necessary to claim your discount. There is no filing and processing claims with Pet Assure;
  6. Waiting periods: One of the greatest benefits of having Pet Assure on board is the lack of a necessity for waiting periods. You simply sign up for their pet coverage discount and you can start using veterinary services at cheaper prices at any vet clinic that participates in their discount program. That’s a 0 days waiting period for all accidents, illnesses, orthopedic conditions, and wellness exams.
    • Illnesses – 0 days;
    • Accidents – 0 days;
    • Wellness – 0 days;
    • Orthopedic conditions – 0 days.
  7. Discount pet health coverage with Pet Assure is valid across the entire United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico, as long as the veterinary clinic, emergency center, or specialty clinic that you plan to visit is enrolled in the Pet Assure program. With one coverage, you can get the 25% discount in all three countries;
  8. Bilateral conditions are absolutely included with your Pet Assure pet coverage. Just like pre-existing conditions, disorders such as knee tissue issues, cruciate ligament conditions, glaucoma, and more, are all covered by Pet Assure’s discount.

Pet Assure Discount Coverage Plans

Pet Assure offers four pet coverage plans that all provide the same discounted coverage, but are rather aimed at the type of pet and the number of pets that you’re enrolling. That’s right, with Pet Assure, you can enroll one, two to four, or an unlimited number of animals from a single family.

Pet Assure’s coverage secures a 25% discount on all in-office veterinary services, be it wellness exams, emergency or follow-up check-ups and lab testing, diagnostics, treatments, surgeries, hospitalization, after-care, and much more.

All of those would be 25% cheaper than their regular price if you sign up for a Pet Assure discount ID.

An important thing to note here is that you can use your Pet Assure pet coverage only and exclusively at veterinary locations that have an agreement with Pet Assure to offer their discount. It’s sort of a Pet Assure network comprised of over 5,600 licensed veterinarians across the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The best thing about Pet Assure’s coverage is its policy on inclusivity. All kinds of pets are welcome to get on one of their coverage plans. Cats and dogs are the standard, but fish, birds, reptiles, rabbits, rodents, turtles, llamas, horses, and big farm animals are all allowed to get on board.

We assume this is incredibly valuable for every pet parent that owns an exotic pet as it’s extremely rare to find a pet insurance company that would insure anything other than cats and dogs.

Another strong suit of the Pet Assure discount program is its coverage for pre-existing, congenital, and hereditary conditions. You can have a pet insurance plan, and that’s totally fine, but those would never cover pre-existing conditions. With Pet Assure, you can get them successfully treated at a reduced price.

What you need to remember about the Pet Assure coverage plan is that you can only cover a quarter of your vet bill with it (25%). The rest comes straight out of your pocket unless you combine the Pet Assure discount plan with a pet insurance plan from another provider.

Finally, let’s review the four Pet Assure pet coverage plans:

  1. Single Cat – Coverage for a single cat or another small pet like a fish, bird, lizard, small snake, ferret, rabbit, skunk, guinea pig, reptile, turtle, rodent, sugar glider, or other pet of similar size;
  2. Single Dog – Coverage for a single dog or another large animal like a horse, llama, pot-bellied pig, large snake, or other pet of similar size;
  3. Family – Coverage for two to four pets in your household regardless of their type or size;
  4. Unlimited – Coverage for all of your pets in your household regardless of their type or size.

The following are the benefits that come with each Pet Assure pet coverage policy:

  • Annual coverage limits: Unlimited;
  • Annual deductibles: $0;
  • Waiting period: 0 days;
  • Discount: 25%.

Another great thing that’s worth remembering is that there are no pet age restrictions, no matter their type or size. Baby pets and senior pets are all welcome in the Pet Assure family.

What’s Covered With a Pet Assure Policy

Pet Assure advertises its program as coverage for practically all in-house veterinary services. We’ve put their word to the test and discovered that what they say is absolutely true.

The following is the complete list of instances coverable by Pet Assure’s discount policy:

  • Birth and treatments relating to pregnancy and nursing.

If there’s anything you don’t see included on the list above, but you’re certain that it’s performed as an in-house procedure at a vet clinic, we’re sure that the Pet Assure coverage discount will apply to it as well.

What’s Excluded From the Pet Assure’s Pet Coverage

Only a few, obvious instances are excluded from Pet Assure’s Pet coverage discount program. Anything that’s considered as an out-of-house service can’t be discounted by Pet Assure.

Examples include prescription medications and foods that are taken home with you (those administered in the vet’s office are included), routine boarding and grooming, outsourced services that are sent to outside clinics or labs for testing such as blood work or urinalysis, and transportation fees to and from the vet clinic.

It’s also worth noting that Pet Assure’s discount cannot be combined with discounts from other providers or service packages. Combinations with pet insurance plans are allowed.

Extra Features

Besides the very convenient discount that comes with each Pet Assure pet coverage policy, there are a couple more services that they provide at no additional cost.

Lost Pet Recovery Service

Pet Assure equips all of their policyholders with ThePetTag – a convenient collar tag that helps with recovering lost or stolen pets.

ThePetTag is included in your Pet Assure membership for free. They will supply you with as many tags as there are pets on your Pet Assure plan. Every tag comes with a unique ID, so all you have to do is secure each tag to each of your pets’ collars.

If, unfortunately, a pet of yours strays and gets lost, the finder of your pet will be able to identify them by scanning ThePetTag or calling the service so they can obtain your contact information.

You can also put other emergency contacts on your pet’s tag and whenever a pet is found, any of you can be contacted so you can easily retrieve your pet.

Pet Education Section

The second complementary feature offered by Pet Assure is their extensive knowledge base.

The Pet Education section is a veterinary-reviewed database of articles and information about canine, feline, and exotic breeds, and all of the diseases that affect cats and dogs.

There, you can learn more about the breed of your pets and educate yourself on what can possibly affect them throughout the duration of their life. That way, you can be better prepared on how to take care of your pet and what to do in certain situations.

Pet Assure Pet Coverage Pricing Plan

Unlike pet insurance companies which most often increase the price of your monthly period, Pet Assure keeps their prices flat and fixed, forever.

It doesn’t matter how old your pets are when you sign them up on the Pet Assure program or how long they stay on it. The location of your residence is not a factor in determining the price of your discount plan as well. It’s completely safe to say that once you choose your favorite plan, its price will stay the same as long as you’re on it.

Here’s how much it costs to purchase each of Pet Assure’s pet coverage plans:

  1. Single Cat$9.95/month if billed monthly ($6.58/month if billed annually – for a total of $79.00 which is billed once);
  2. Single Dog$11.95/ month if billed monthly ($8.25/month if billed annually – for a total of $99.00 which is billed once);
  3. Family $16.95/month if billed monthly ($12.42/month if billed annually – for a total of $149.00 which is billed once);
  4. Unlimited $21.95/month if billed monthly ($16.58/month if billed annually – for a total of $199.00 which is billed once).

Discounts and Savings

You’ve probably already noticed above that if you opt for annual billing your Pet Assure bill will be much cheaper. That is 25% – 35% lower than the usual monthly price.

That’s only one of the discounts available for Pet Assure’s pet coverage plan. If you opt for the program through your employer, you’ll receive an additional bump in your discount. How much is every employer’s discretion, so make sure to check if this employee benefit is offered at your workplace and discover the amount of the discount yourself.

Lastly, you can test Pet Assure’s services for a staggering 45 days for free. During this 45-days trial period, if anything doesn’t go according to your expectations, you’re free to cancel the service and a full refund will be issued to your preferred payment method, no questions asked.

How Does Pet Assure Compare With Its Competitors?

To give a better glimpse of how Pet Assure works and how it stacks against other providers in the niche, we’re comparing it to three other pet coverage companies.

Pet Assure is an alternative to pet insurance, but in this section, we’ll compare the service to both traditional pet insurance services and another alternative in a similar regard.

The charts below can help you better understand every tiny detail about Pet Assure and its competitors so you’ll know which service to aim your hopes for.

The three companies that we’ll use in this section are Companion Protect, Pawp, and PetFirst. Check their details and access their full reviews to see if they would suit you better than Pet Assure or in a combination with it.

Pet Assure vs. Companion Protect

Companion Protect is definitely a pet insurance provider but in such an unusual way. Unlike other pet insurers in the niche, Companion Protect imposes zero waiting periods in their accident and illness pet coverage policy.

They provide low, $100 deductibles which are per incident, and even throw in a couple of wellness exams per year, free of charge.

Like Pet Assure, they have their own network of licensed veterinarians (but the rest of the vets are also available to policyholders). If you decide to use an in-network vet, you don’t have to worry about paying your vet bills. You just have to deal with your share of the bargain (deductible and copayment) and Companion Protect will deal with the rest.

Pet Assure vs. Pawp

Pawp is similar to Pet Assure in the way of both services representing alternative ways to provide pet coverage for your pets. While Pet Assure provides a chunky discount on all vet services, Pawp takes care only of life-threatening emergencies.

That might not seem very generous, but note that Pawp will completely cover up to one emergency situation per year if its veterinary cost doesn’t surpass the set amount of $3,000.

The service includes a 24/7 dedicated veterinary professional that can be electronically reached whenever you need them. To activate your Pawp emergency fund, you actually have to contact one of their veterinary pros and gain their approval.

Pet Assure vs. PetFirst

Among all three options here, PetFirst is the pet insurance company that resonates with that phrase the most.

The company is one of the most reliable providers on the current market with low deductible options, coverage for everything you’ll ever need for your pet, and access to accident cover in a single day.

They even reinstate curable pre-existing conditions and offer options for discounts and savings so you can comprise a truly affordable pet insurance policy.

Customer Service

Pet Assure pet coverage review featuring three standing parrots on a palm

Reaching Pet Assure is not the brightest aspect of their service. They offer a phone number, live chat, and an online form where you can shoot them a message (hidden in the FAQ section), but that’s pretty much all.

They have no mobile apps, no email address, and are reachable only for 8 hours on working days.

The following is all of the contact info available for Pet Assure:

  • Phone: (888) 789-7387;
  • Live chat option on their website;
  • Address:
    Pet Assure Corp
    211 Boulevard of the Americas, Suite 403
    Lakewood, NJ 08701
  • Working hours:
    Monday through Friday: 8 am – 6 pm EST
    Saturday and Sunday: Closed

To manage your Pet Assure pet coverage policy, you can give them a phone call at the number provided above, or log into your online account.

Regarding the lack of a mobile app, we have to be honest and state that their website is quite straightforward and decently responsive, so not having an app on your phone is not a huge loss.

Customer Reviews

Going through our Pet Assure pet coverage review, it seems like the service seems flawless with nothing bad to say about it. While many Pet Assure customers seem to attest to that sentiment, there are those who’ve had experiences that are nothing to brag about.

That’s why we dedicate this section to including several positive and several negative real user reviews about Pet Assure. That way you’ll get unbiased, first-hand testimonies that might demonstrate the real picture about Pet Assure.

Positive Pet Assure Pet Coverage Reviews

Great Customer Service!

I recently needed an echocardiogram on my little Shih Tzu. I specifically chose a vet that participates with Pet Assure. When I checked in I told the gal at the desk I had Pet Assure and did I need to do anything that day, she said no. This was my first time using Pet Assure, so I was not aware I was supposed to show my account number to them. Apparently, the receptionist was not aware either.

When I got home, I looked on the Pet Assure website and saw that the discount should have been taken at the time of payment. I called Pet Assure and the customer service rep was very nice, explaining to me their procedure. They looked into it and ended up sending me a check for the 25% discount, which amounted to $120.00. Thank you Pet Assure for taking care of me even though it was my error in not knowing the correct procedure. I won’t make that mistake again!

Patti Penn Jury

Worth every cent and dollar…saved me a lot of money. Bottom line is that it works and you’re not just wasting your money with these greedy insurance companies that keep on raising your insurance every year.

The bad reviews are probably from the big insurance competitors that hire people to write bad reviews. They are probably mad that Pet Assure offers low fixed cost discounts compared to those high expenses insurance monthly costs. Think about it. Insurance companies make a lot of money off their clients and of course, they would be mad if a pet medical discount service took their clients away because 25% for a low monthly cost would be way better than paying hundreds of dollars for insurance that will bleed you dry.

I had pet insurance and it was a waste of money. Now I just set up a bank account where I deposit monthly money into that account for future pet medical expenses and I use Pet Assure for the discount off the medical bills. Think about the money that you pay for your pet insurance and imagine depositing that money into an account for your dog. You would probably have enough for a big future medical problem and imagine having a discount card to reduce the medical expenses once it happens.

Overall I’m extremely happy with Pet Assure’s low monthly FIXED cost. I don’t know how people can complain when the monthly cost is so cheap compared to insurance and overall saves you in the long run.

Khang K Luu

As easy as 1, 2, 3.

1. Pet Assure is not insurance. Rather it offers a discount on services provided at your vet’s office.
2. Pet Assure will save you money! It can pay for itself in one or two visits.
3. Pet Assure is so easy to use: register your card with your vet’s office and remind them of the discount with each visit. Done.

Thankfully, most years, my pets have needed only their basic care. Even then, Pet Assure has helped.

Negative Pet Assure Pet Coverage Reviews

This company has articles on its site (“Max’s Corner”) that discuss Scottish Fold and Teacup Persian cats in a positive way. I feel that it’s extremely unethical to breed and sell companion animals that are deformed from birth and cannot function as well as normal cats just because people like having something that’s cute and also a status symbol. I’m only giving them 2 stars because they at least mention the terrible health problems such cats have. But their breeding should be highly discouraged by anyone calling themselves a veterinarian.

Demimonde Mesila Thraam

Incredibly misleading

When researching pet insurance on Google Pet Assure came up. Their Google my business category says “Pet Insurance”. They are simply a vet discount outlet. I had been paying for what I thought was coverage for a year, my pet had an emergency procedure and I came to find out Pet Assure is just an app you show the vet to get 10% off.

I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to think you have coverage and come to find out it is just a “rewards” oriented plan. Do your research. THIS IS NOT INSURANCE, just a 10% off coupon.

Sean Adams

The price is good but it does not work for all animal clinics. There is only one in Stockton and they have online coupons that give you a better discount and none in Lodi. I contacted Pet Assure about this. They suggest I send out emails for them to join, which I did a lot some 2-3 times, no luck; maybe if they reach out to the Vet animal clinics, and it does not cover out of the clinic lab test. It might be OK if you can live in Sacramento. I have not been able to use it yet. Check the animal clinics that honor Pet Assure before you join.

Sylvia Smith

Avoid this company at all costs

Do yourself a favor and avoid this company. I have paid into this waste of money for years. I finally took my cat to the vet and ended up with $800+ in bills. I reached out to Pet Assure and was told I needed to present my card at the time of payment to receive the discount. They would not give me a discount after the fact. I explained I had no idea I needed a card and assured her they never sent me a card.

he very unfriendly lady told me they no longer mail cards and I should have printed a virtual card. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT? This company is very disappointing and I am also complaining to my company for partnering with such a shady company. Disgraceful is all I can say. I can’t even cancel my membership until my company renews insurance 10 months from now.

Conclusion

Let’s wrap up this Pet Assure Pet Coverage review with a quick sum-up.

Time to part ways with this Pet Assure pet coverage review.

To sum up, Pet Assure is a pillar in providing more access to decent pet healthcare for all pet owners across the country. They’ve been in business for almost three decades now, offering discounts for all kinds of veterinary services.

Among the many pet insurance companies out there, Pet Assure is here to instill balance by allowing pet parents to cover even the pre-existing and hereditary conditions of their beloved companions – something that’s never included with pet insurance coverage.

Some of their amazing features include no waiting periods, a lost pet recovery service, no deductible, and unlimited benefits throughout the entire life of your pet.

Besides Nationwide, Pet Assure is the only pet coverage provider that allows exotic animals on their policies.

Their long-standing position in the industry speaks volumes about their expertise, reliability, and stability.

The only downside of Pet Assure is arguably their low discount program (only 25%), but considering their low monthly fee, a discount of that proportion can save you thousands in the long run.

Pet Assure is at its strongest when combined with a traditional pet insurance plan. To browse many pet insurance options, simply take a look around Protect My Paws. There will surely be something there that’s an excellent fit for your requirements.

Pet Assure Alternatives

Focusing on your pet’s wellness is tremendously generous on your side. But it can be expensive! While Pet Assure can help with some of those costs, Banfield Pet Hospital can assist you even more in that regard. The company offers another alternative way to provide routine and preventative care for your pet. Unlimited wellness visits, vaccines, and parasite control are just some of the many things they can help your pet with. And just like Pet Assure, they cover pre-existing conditions and have no waiting periods.

Healthy Paws is one of the most excellently rated pet insurance companies. Known not only for their amazing pet insurance plans, Healthy Paws dedicate much of their time to helping the animals in our communities that are in the direst situation. Regarding pet coverage, this pet insurer offers to pay your vet bills directly to your vet, processes claims in 2 days on average, and even enables seamless policy transfer to another owner.

Our third Pet Assure alternative for today is Bivvy – a pet insurance agency suitable for everyone that doesn’t want to break their bank but still afford decent pet coverage for their furry friends. Bivvy reimburses only 50% of your vet bills, but it costs a low monthly premium ranging from $9/month to $15/month. They also offer an affordable wellness plan for just $9/month and their coverage includes bilateral conditions, endodontic treatments, and even end-of-life expenses.

F.A.Q.

I’ve been using a vet that hasn’t joined the Pet Assure network of licensed veterinarians. Is there a way I could use my Pet Assure discount with them?

If your vet hasn’t joined the Pet Assure network of vets, unfortunately, you cannot use your discount with them. Can I sign up a different animal than a cat or a dog with Pet Assure?

That is correct. Any of Pet Assure’s plans will allow you to sign up an exotic pet like bird, fish, rabbit, reptile, gecko, turtle, monkey, or big farm animals like horses, and llamas. You can either sign them up in their respective solo plans (which allow only a small or large pet type) or use the family plans where you can mix pets of any size.

What are the differences between Pet Assure and the traditional pet insurance coverage?

While there are different types of pet insurance plans out there, they all share some common characteristics. Here’s how the usual pet insurance plan compares to Pet Assure’s pet coverage plan:

  • Pet insurance comes with a deductible – Pet Assure doesn’t;
  • Pet insurance reimburses the costs of your vet bills – Pet Assure reduces the price of your vet bills;
  • Pet insurance doesn’t cover pre-existing conditions – Pet Assure does;
  • Pet insurance imposes various waiting periods – Pet Assure doesn’t;
  • Pet Assure is much more affordable than the average pet insurance plan.
