More info

ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

Lemonade is one of the few insurance companies that operate in multiple countries. They are not present only in the USA, but also across Europe, or more specifically in Germany, the Netherlands, and France.

While Lemonade has been in the insurance space only for a few years, they’re not an insurance start-up. They categorize themselves as a full-stack insurance carrier, collaborating with some of the most trusted partners in the world. In a short amount of time, they managed to offer homeowners and renters insurance, as well as life, pet, and car insurance to millions of customers.

They’re also different from traditional insurers in regards to ensuring enough financial stability to always be ready to pay each claim that policyholders request from them. Their pet insurance services follow all the latest trends and are reinforced by advanced technology. Artificial intelligence plays a huge role in assisting every policyholder in all aspects of handling their pet insurance policies.

In this Lemonade pet insurance review, we’ll focus on the pet insurance offered by Lemonade and everything that surrounds it – its pet coverage plans, their prices, how they compare to other pet insurance providers, and we’ll even throw some customer reviews in there, so let’s get started.

Lemonade’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: Lemonade Insurance Agency LLC
    • AM Best Rating: A
    • BBB Rating: C
  2. Exam period: Lemonade requires a full physical exam of your pet, performed by a licensed veterinarian within 12 months prior to your enrollment with the company. You can also sign up and submit your pet’s full medical history within the first 14 days of enrollment. This is required, so the insurer can establish which conditions to consider as pre-existing and omit from the insurance policy.
  3. Increase in monthly premium: Almost every pet insurance provider increases the price of policy premiums after some time you spend with them. As your pet grows older, they become more susceptive to injuries and illnesses, which means that they’ll require more medical attention in their senior years. Lemonade will increase your premium to adapt to the growing need for higher reimbursements. They also closely monitor the costs of veterinary services where you live and optimize the prices of premiums according to the changes on the market.

    Usually, pet insurance agencies don’t increase premium prices based on how many claims you make with them. Lemonade is an exception in this case. They claim that they keep track of your credit score and the trends of your claim submissions and factor in that data when they consider increasing the price of your premium.
  4. Claim submission time limit: Every policyholder has 180 days from the moment of paying for a vet bill to submit an insurance claim for it with Lemonade. If you file your claim after this timeframe, Lemonade might reject it and keep the right not to reimburse you for it.
  5. Claim processing times: Looking at both Lemonade’s website and app, it’s not clear what the claim repayment timeline is. Companies usually make a promise to fully process claims within 30 days of their submission. However, we looked at many online reviews from real customers and concluded that they are, in fact, quite fast with the repayment process. They usually pay their policyholders in 5 to 10 days on average.
  6. Waiting periods: Lemonade’s waiting periods are quite convenient even though they are mostly within the average in comparison to all other pet insurance providers. The waiting period for illnesses is 14 days which is the same for more than half of the other companies, while accidents have a pretty short waiting period of only 2 days. Orthopedic conditions (cruciate ligaments), however, are set for a 6-month waiting period.
    • Accidents – 2 days;
    • Illnesses – 14 days;
    • Wellness – 1 day;
    • Orthopedic conditions – 6 months.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with Lemonade is valid only in the USA. You can’t use Lemonade’s pet insurance coverage when you travel outside US borders. Additionally, Lemonade is not available for purchase nationwide, yet. They currently serve 35 US states (AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, GA, IA, IL, IN, MD, MI, MS, MT, ND, NE, NC, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, WA, and WI) but plan to expand nationwide in the near future.
  8. Bilateral conditions can affect both sides of a cat/dog’s body. They are grouped in a single category because of their characteristic to affect both sides of a cat/dog’s body. For example, cataracts can first appear on one eye, but the second one has a huge risk of developing the disorder. So, if some of the following has affected your pet before your enrollment with Lemonade, the other organ on the other side of the pet’s body will be excluded from coverage as well: cherry eye, glaucoma, cataracts, cruciate ligament, hip dysplasia, or luxation of the patella.

Lemonade’s Insurance Plans

Lemonade accident and illness pet coverage is a highly-customizable option, optimized to provide pet owners with the protection tools when their pet’s health is in question.

This lemonade pet coverage plan is a top-level pet insurance solution that helps by covering everything from diagnostics like blood tests and MRIs to surgeries, hospitalization, and medication.

The biggest asset of this plan is its flexibility. You can tweak between the numerous options for deductible, annual claim limit, and reimbursement level.

These are all of the options available on the Lemonade pet insurance package:

  • Annual benefit amounts: $5,000, $10,000, $20,000, $50,000, and $100,000;
  • Annual deductibles: $100, $250, and $500;
  • Reimbursement percentages: 70%, 80%, and 90%.

Lemonade’s coverage is available for all cats and dogs, no matter their age. There are no restrictions on how old they can be, but kittens and puppies have to be at least 8 weeks old so they can be put on a Lemonade pet insurance policy.

The waiting periods that come when you sign up for a Lemonade policy are quite optimal in comparison to what’s a standard in the pet insurance market at the moment. Accidents have a low waiting period of 2 days while illnesses are assigned the average waiting period of 14 days. Note that some orthopedic conditions like cruciate ligaments, for instance, have a waiting period of 6 months.

Some pet insurance providers offer pet coverage that’s available even when you travel to other countries like Canada, Puerto Rico, or even the entire world. Sadly, Lemonade is not one of those companies. Their pet coverage is valid only throughout the US, but you can use it at any licensed veterinarian.

Claims can be submitted via your online account or the Lemonade app. You can get your money back through a mail check or directly deposited into your bank account.

  • Coverage for physical and alternative therapies – whenever your pet has a mobility or functionality issue, therapies such as chiropractic, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, acupuncture, etc. can be covered so your pet can better recover (optional add-on for an extra monthly fee).

What’s Excluded From Lemonade’s Coverage

Lemonade’s pet health insurance is always there for you whenever your furry friends make an unusual sound of discomfort. Instead of worrying about what it might be, you can be backed by a comprehensive pet insurance plan and never consider whether you should pay for your pet’s health or not.

Pet insurance policies usually contain most of what you’ll ever need, but there are certainly some exclusions in them. Companies employ this practice in order to protect themselves from unfair usage and shady claims.

There’s an entire list of exclusions when it comes to Lemonade’s pet coverage and we’ll include it in its entirety below, so you could always be in the know for what to expect from your insurance provider in different situations.

The following instances are excluded from Lemonade’s pet coverage policy:

  • Pre-existing conditions (any injury or condition that develops before or during the given waiting periods (2 days for accidents, 14 days for illnesses, and 6 months for orthopedic conditions);
  • Bilateral conditions – disorders that affect both sides of a pet’s body and were present on one side before enrolling with Lemonade (glaucoma, cataracts, cherry eye, luxating patella, hip or elbow dysplasia, knee tissue disorders, etc.);
  • Wellness (routine and preventative procedures) pet healthcare like vaccines, flea and tick control, deworming, etc. (optional add-on for an extra monthly fee);
  • Prescription dietary supplements and diet food;
  • Costs of boarding a pet with a kennel or cattery or putting it in daycare;
  • Any kind of training including behavioral and obedience training;
  • Grooming and elective cosmetic procedures (ear cropping, eyelash removal, declawing, tail docking, elective gastropexy, dental cosmetics, anal gland expression, and similar procedures);
  • Alternative medications and experimental treatments like aromatherapy, CBD and essential oils, etc.;
  • The costs that arise due to complications with breeding, pregnancy, whelping, or nursing;
  • Illnesses and injuries that are a direct result of your negligence or intentionally caused by your or a close member of your family;
  • Treatments for injuries or illnesses caused by using your pet for commercial activities that are not approved by Lemonade: organized fighting, guarding, coursing, racing, and similar activities;

Lemonade’s Wellness Plans

Focusing on preventing the culprits that may cause your pet’s health to deteriorate can go long-term into ensuring they enjoy a long and happy life.

With that in mind, Lemonade constructed three pet wellness care plans that you can add to your base accident and illness coverage for an extra monthly fee. Preventative, Preventative+, and Puppy/Kitten Preventative are the three packages that you can choose from and give your pet the best preventative care they deserve.

In the charts below, we’ll detail all of the benefits that come on these three separate wellness plans along with their annual limits:

The prices of all three plans vary depending on which reimbursement amount (70%, 80%, or 90%) you would choose when building your base accident and illness policy plan.

Cats and dogs under 2 years old can choose from the Preventative and the Puppy/Kitten Preventative packages, while those that are 2 and older are offered a choice between the Preventative and the Preventative+ packages.

The coverage that comes on any of the above-mentioned plans doesn’t undergo a waiting period (it’s effective immediately on the date of enrollment) and none of them impose any type of deductible.

Note that things like behavioral training, physical therapy, grooming, or nail trimming aren’t included on any of Lemonade’s pet wellness care plans.

Extra Features

Like things weren’t good enough, Lemonade offers two more additions to their base accident and illness coverage to make their pet coverage policy an incredible asset for every pet parent.

These two additional features are optional and can be added to any pet coverage policy for an extra monthly fee (just like the wellness plans). Their prices depend on the pet’s details and the amount of coverage that you’d choose.

Let’s review them!

Veterinary Visit Fees Add-On

In addition to the costs for diagnostic and lab tests, procedures, and treatments at the vet clinic, pet owners are usually charged a fee for checking their pet with the vet and consulting their opinion about their pet’s condition.

This add-on provides coverage any time you visit a licensed veterinarian for an issue your pet may have that’s covered by your Lemonade pet coverage. Before vets can provide any treatment, they first need to examine your pet and diagnose their condition. This exam is billed separately on your vet bill invoice and this Lemonade add-on is great for taking care of its cost.

This add-on, similarly to normal vet treatments, is subject to an annual deductible. Its price is based on your base coverage benefits and your pet’s details (age, breed, size, and location).

Physical Therapy Add-On

Whenever your pet fractures or sprains something, the treatment for fixing the injury or condition is definitely covered by Lemonade’s base policy. However, oftentimes pets (just like humans) need more care to fully recover and gain 100% of their functionally. That’s what physical and alternative therapies are for, and with this add-on, their costs will be covered by Lemonade.

By adding the physical therapy add-on to your Lemonade pet coverage policy, the company will be able to reimburse you for treatments that are required for mobility and functionality issues.

Coverage for instances such as physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and similar treatments are all included on this add-on.

Just like the vet visit fees add-on, the physical therapy add-on requires payment of an annual deductible when it’s first used.

Lemonade’s Pricing Quotes

To get a better notion of how expensive Lemonade is, we fetched some quotes, both for cats and dogs, and reviewed them thoroughly.

After our assessment, we concluded that Lemonade is quite affordable compared to other top players in the niche.

Their pet accident and illness coverage can start as low as $12/month, but note that if you want more benefits (low deductible and high reimbursement percentage) the price of your premium will go up.

It’s also worth mentioning that the older your pet is, the higher your monthly premium will be. Our humble advice here is to make sure and insure your pets while they are still young and healthy. Note that purebred cats and dogs also have more expensive premiums and mixed-breed ones are usually cheaper.

How Does Lemonade Compare With Its Competitors?

In this section, we’ll compare Lemonade to three other pet insurance agencies, similar to Lemonade.

The purpose of this practice is to keep you in the loop about what others in the industry offer for similar prices, so you can compare and decide for yourself which provider would be a better fit for you.

The three pet insurers of our choice are Bingo, ASPCA Pet Insurance, and Prudent Pet. Each of those is compared separately below, with outlined details such as coverage options, claim limits, ratings, etc.

Lemonade vs. Bingo

Bingo is for those that are looking for a different approach to pet insurance – something Lemonade doesn’t offer. Bingo is one of the very few companies that manage to pile up most of their different coverage options into optional add-ons so every pet owner can decide what they personally need and pay only for what they’ll be using.

Bingo is amazing for providing great benefits for dental and oral care, they have short waiting periods, and do not require a veterinary exam as a requirement for enrollment.

Lemonade vs. ASPCA Pet Insurance

ASPCA Pet Insurance is probably one of the most similar pet insurance agencies to Lemonade.

They are a bit pricier than Lemonade and have a longer waiting period for accidents, however, they are still on the affordable side while managing to include more coverage clauses than Lemonade in their base policy.

Such examples are the coverage for veterinary fees, alternative and holistic therapies, and microchipping.

Lemonade vs. Prudent Pet

Prudent Pet is a top-notch pet insurer that’s well-adored among pet parents. Especially when it comes to their pet wellness coverage options.

Pet owners love Prudent Pet because they include incredible benefits in their base pet coverage that otherwise come at a hefty price. That includes coverage for advertising and reward whenever your pet is stolen or strays, reimbursement for vacation costs when you need to cancel because of a pet emergency, costs for boarding with a kennel or a cattery, etc.

So, wherever you need help from Lemonade, simply access their website or the mobile app and there you can find a convenient online form where you can shoot your message.

Here you can witness a few positive and negative customer reviews about Lemonade:

Positive Lemonade Pet Insurance Reviews

Wowzer! What an amazing team and insurance! And talk about God watching out for my sweet Siberian and perfect timing. I think I’ll be with Lemonade forever. They’re like a family member that’s always there for you… every step of the way. Emily was very thorough and helpful. Thanks!!

Lin

We have had two emergencies this year and the Lemonade Team has been nothing but friendly and fast. The communication has been excellent. It’s my first time owning a dog and having to purchase dog insurance but it has been worth it. They’ve made sure we have a great first-time experience.

Julitza Llanos

My cat has been sick and is currently undergoing a workup. We’ve had several vet visits in the last few months with different consultants. Each time I submit a claim to Lemonade, the process has been easy and they have turned around the approval for my claim with reimbursement within the week. I have been very happy with my experience with Lemonade and so appreciate their help in covering the expenses for my cat’s care.

Riana Wurzburger

Have Been Very Happy with My Policy

I love that you do everything through their app and when you submit a claim you record a video of what occurred in your own words. I was always kept up to date within an email that the claims team was working on my claim. It was taking a bit longer than expected due to volume at that time. The refund was transferred right to my bank account within a couple of days. I had my pups on a previous insurance but they were awful. I have been very happy with Lemonade!

Angel Shute

Negative Lemonade Pet Insurance Reviews

Really great company but has some issues.

I really love Lemonade. Everything they do is on time, easy to use, and perfect. Claims are processed in a great manner and it is very clear what is covered and what isn’t. However, what is not clear is that you cannot change your coverage midway through the year even though it is only billed monthly and can be canceled at any time.

For example, I wanted to remove my wellness plan and was told I had to wait 11 months to do so. So I obviously canceled my plan and resubscribed without the wellness plan. This is not good customer service in my opinion and they are banking on the fact that you do not want to restart the waiting periods or get into a bad situation with pre-existing conditions to get more money out of you. Not good!

Aria Tedjarati

I am currently in the process of trying to see if I could file a claim for some damage, but the app experience to file is not convenient or flexible enough for my case. Tried contacting Lemonade through various channels, their main phone line is a dead-end, simply no response/dead air after an initial message, tried contacting via chat, no real person, only an AI bot. I do get emails after using the app and leaving chat messages, saying someone will contact me, but none so far.

This customer experience alone is not worth the savings they offer. If you do have some issues/claims needing their attention, I don’t think they are capable of actually transacting and handling claim cases. That to me is bordering on fraud. At minimum, they should be required to have live agents available.

I will be looking into sharing this experience on other social media platforms to help other potential customers make an informed decision before signing up.

Thomas Kloetzli

I have had a policy with Lemonade since they launched. However, 5 days ago, in the middle of my policy term, they increased my premium, changed my deductibles, and lowered my coverage.

I have called and emailed them for 5 days. The issue has not yet been resolved. Now when I call, I get 10 minutes of hold time, followed by a suggestion to leave a message or email them. The call is then automatically disconnected.

If you have a policy with Lemonade, please keep a close watch on it to make sure unauthorized changes are not made without your consent.

Lemonade’s accident and illness plan, when completed by the two optional add-ons for vet visit fees and physical therapy, is an asset of incredible value when it comes to providing protection for your pet’s health.

Lemonade Alternatives

The pet issuance market is on the rise lately, with more companies emerging and offering tons of different healthcare coverage features. For that purpose, here we’ll include a few that we consider as decent alternatives to Lemonade.

Among the many pet insurance agencies, we’re choosing Hartville as our first alternative. Similar to Lemonade, Hartville is a reliable and pretty affordable option, but with the addition of coverage for veterinary exam fees at no extra cost. Hartville also erases pre-existing conditions if 6 months have passed from the last time your pet demonstrated symptoms for a condition it previously had.

Trupanion is a well-renowned pet insurer that a vast number of pet owners choose as their primary pet insurance provider. Their unique approach to deductibles (per-incident instead of annual) has proved as a great incentive to get more customers by the day.

 is also probably the only company that doesn’t increase the price of your monthly premium based on the age of your pet.

Our last alternative is Bivvy – a novice in the industry with a decent amount of experience and claim handling. It is one of the cheapest options out there, mainly because of the fact that it only reimburses 50% of vet bills. The only downside is that it’s only available in about half the cities in our county.

F.A.Q.

Is there a mobile app where I can easily file claims with Lemonade?

There definitely is. Follow these links (iOS app / Android app) and download them to your smartphone. Next, log in to your Lemonade account and you’re ready to vibe! Building insurance policies and getting paid on your claims within the apps is a matter of minutes!

How many claims am I allowed to file within a policy period? Should I file even those that are lower than my actual deductible?

With Lemonade, you can file as many claims as you wish. They’ll all be neatly processed, even those that are lower than your deductible. Lemonade’s deductible is paid only once a year whenever you have a veterinary bill, so it’s convenient for you to file a claim even if it was for less money than your deductible.

Does Lemonade provide its own private network of veterinarians? If so, does that mean that I would have to ditch my current veterinarian?

No, Lemonade is available at any licensed veterinarian anywhere in the county. You don’t ever have to worry about which veterinarian you should use, and you can definitely keep your current vet.

Will getting a pet insurance policy by Lemonade affect my credit score in any way?

Sometimes, Lemonade runs a “soft” check on your credit so they can evaluate if you’re suitable for enrolling with them. But, no, owning a Lemonade pet insurance policy doesn’t affect your credit score in any way.
