More info

ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

Founded by pet owners for fellow pet owners, Embrace started offering their amazing pet insurance coverage in 2003. It’s headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio and it was proclaimed one of the best places to work in the state.

Allowing their customers to use their pet coverage with any veterinarian, anywhere in the world is just one of the many reasons why Embrace is so well respected among its competitors.

Some insurance providers who are a bit late to the game in the pet insurance world, understand very well who Embrace are and how reliable they are to their clients, so they decide to administer their policies through them in order to leverage the “Embrace” trademark. Some examples include giants like GEICO, Allstate, and USAA.

To make things more impressive, they reach out to rescue and shelter centers across the nation and donate $2.00 for each pet insurance policy they sell.

This Embrace pet insurance review will help you discover every feature that Embrace offers, how their pet insurance plans stack against their main rivals, how much they cost, and what their customers reveal about their past experiences with the pet insurance provider.

Embrace’s Insurance Plans

Embrace offers two pet insurance plans to cover your pups and kittens from both external and internal harm. Designed to be customized with multiple options so customers can find the best fit for their budget, it makes Embrace one of the best picks currently on the market.

Accident and Illness Plan

Filing for the Accident and Illness plan pricing quote is a great way to find out what this plan is actually all about. After you provide detailed info about your cat or dog, you’ll be presented with a recommended option that’s most suitable for your pet’s age, breed, gender, and state of residence.

You can further customize your plan by switching between the different amounts for annual deductible, reimbursement percentage, and annual claim limit.

The Accident and Illness plan offers the following personalization choices:

  • Annual claim limits: $5,000, $8,000, $10,000, $15,000, and $30,000;
  • Annual deductibles: $200, $300, $500, $750, and $1,000;
  • Reimbursement percentages: 70%, 80%, and 90%.

Remember that you can’t file a claim for an accident with this plan before 2 days have passed from the moment of your sign-up, and 14 days for an illness. Dogs with orthopedic conditions need to wait 6 months before a claim can be submitted for them unless they go through an orthopedic exam and a waiver process.

The age restriction for this plan is 15 years of age. Younger pets that are already enrolled on the Accident and Illness plan will remain on it for life.

What’s Covered With an Embrace’s Policy

Let’s jump into a quick overview of what illnesses, accidents, emergencies, and conditions are covered with a pet insurance policy obtained through Embrace.

  • Breed-specific, genetic and congenital conditions – these conditions include a list of disorders that a pet has due to a gene defect or that they’ve had since birth, such as allergies, hernias, hip and elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, patellar luxation, intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), portosystemic shunt, and more;
  • Chronic conditions - long-term injuries or illnesses like diabetes, arthritis, kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cranial cruciate ligament tears, skin mass, seizures, and more, which are reimbursed with no per-condition limits and continue to be covered with every renewal;
  • Dental illnesses - teeth extractions, root canals and crowns, gingivitis, stomatitis, periodontal disease, and more, which are covered up to $1,000/year and require no dental exam (70% of cats and 80% of dogs develop some form of periodontal disease by the time they turn 3);
  • Cancer – coverage includes all related diagnostics and cancer treatments like surgeries, chemo and radiation therapy, alternative therapy, and follow-ups for cancers such as lymphoma, mast cell tumor, lipoma, melanoma, osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma;
  • Orthopedic conditions – ligament tears, osteosarcoma, fractured bones, and many more are covered after a six-month waiting period (reduced to 14 days with an orthopedic report card);
  • Preventable conditions – Lyme disease, parvo, parasites, and other conditions that could have been avoided are still covered;
  • Alternative treatments and rehabilitation – less-invasive treatments, like laser therapy or acupuncture are included at no extra cost;
  • Behavioral treatments – therapies or prescription medication for behaviors like aggression, pica, or marking;
  • Diagnostic tests – exams for any covered condition or illness such as biopsies, MRIs, X-rays, and more;
  • Prescription drugs – all prescription meds are covered if they are used to treat or manage a condition that’s covered with the policy.

What’s Excluded From Embrace’s Coverage

Embrace excels at being open, honest, and transparent, and they make their policy terms and conditions conveniently accessible so everyone can check them out before they make their choice.

Here’s the list of instances not included in the coverage you’d otherwise receive from Embrace:

  • Pre-existing conditions;
  • Injury or illness from fighting, racing, cruelty, or neglect;
  • DNA testing or cloning;
  • Cosmetic procedures such as tail docking, ear cropping, and dewclaw removal unless medically necessary;
  • Deliberate injury by you or anyone in your household;
  • Breeding, whelping, or pregnancy;
  • Avian flu or nuclear war;
  • Routine veterinary care (like wellness checkup exam fees, vaccinations, spaying/neutering, etc.).

Regarding pre-existing conditions, note that Embrace provides a 12-month medical history review which means they only consider the conditions that occurred in the past year as pre-existing. Additionally, if your furry fellow goes symptom and treatment-free for a full year for a condition it wasn’t covered for, that condition is eligible to enter the list of covered conditions after that period.

Accident-Only Plan

New pets that are older than 15 but want coverage for those unexpected moments in life can sign up for the Accident-Only plan.

This plan lacks the customizability of the Accident and Illness plan and has only one option for each of its key limits. Here’s what’s offered on it:

  • Annual claim limit: $5,000;
  • Annual deductible: $100;
  • Reimbursement percentage: 90%.

As you can see, this is still a reasonably constructed plan that will help you in emergency situations.

Embrace’s Wellness Plans

Embrace’s approach to providing routine healthcare is a bit different from those from the main competition that ride the “wellness train”. While you’ll usually stumble upon wellness plans that reimburse with per-item allowances, the Embrace Wellness Rewards for Routine Care plan works more like a budgeting tool.

The most important instances you need to pay attention when acquiring this wellness option are:

  • Three allowance options: $250/year, $450/year, and $650/year;
  • There is no waiting period for its coverage to go into effect;
  • You can increase the allowance whenever you wish to, but you can’t decrease it;
  • The allowance that you won’t use for the paid billing year, won’t transfer to the next billing cycle;

You’re probably familiar with what preventive necessities cats and dogs require, so here are the reimbursable items that the Wellness Rewards for Routine Care plan covers:

  • Exam fees;
  • Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention;
  • Vaccinations and titers;
  • Fecal and blood exams;
  • Spaying/neutering surgeries;
  • Nutritional supplements;
  • Microchipping;
  • Medicated shampoos;
  • Grooming;
  • Wearable pet activity monitors;
  • Gastropexy;
  • Toe nail trimming;
  • Preventative dental cleanings;
  • Routine anal gland expression;
  • Hip dysplasia exams;
  • X-rays;
  • OFA tests;
  • Prescription diet food;
  • Routine chiropractic care;
  • Training;
  • Massage therapy, reiki, acupuncture;
  • Cremation or burial.

Lastly, there’s a reason why this plan bears the name “Wellness Rewards”. For whichever of the three options you decide to go, you’ll be rewarded with $25 annually which you can use to pay for routine treatments for your pet.

Extra Features

Performing our testing trial over Embrace, we discovered some pretty awesome features that other pet insurance providers seldom offer.

  1. We’re glad to present the Healthy Pet Deductible. It’s a type of reward for healthy pets that haven’t had a claim for a full billing year and receive a “diminishing deductible”. That means that the next billing year, your annual deductible will be lower by $50.

    Depending on your initial annual deductible option, you might need to go claim-free for several years before you can hit the $0 mark for your annual deductible. So the next time you need to file a claim, you will have a lower deductible to pay.

    Note that once you pay your reduced deductible, it resets back to your originally chosen deductible for the next billing year.
  1. For each of their subscribers, Embrace provides access to the PawSupport telemed center. It’s a place where you can easily reach a Pet Pro that will answer all the questions you may have concerning your pet’s health.

    The topics with which a Pet Pro can help you make a better decision for your pet include:
    • Wellness Care;
    • Emergencies;
    • Medication Concerns;
    • Poisons & Toxins;
    • Behavioral Changes;
    • Possible Symptoms;
    • Holistic Care Options;
    • Managing Chronic Conditions;
    • Vitamins & Supplements;
    • Exercise;
    • Training;
    • Diet.

      The service is available 24/7, even on holidays, and accessible only through the MyEmbrace portal. Once there, you can choose to talk to a Pet Pro through phone, live chat, or video conference.

      Note that this feature is only available for Embrace policyholders and can’t be used to diagnose conditions or get prescriptions for medication or treatment.

Embrace’s Pricing Quotes

Whether you choose your deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual claim limit to most conveniently fit your budget or just pick the most expensive options, Embrace definitely offers some of the most competitive premiums on the market.

The price of your monthly premium will be largely based on your pet’s age, breed, size, gender, and location. Naturally, the older your pet is, the more expensive the options will become, as older pets are more prone to illnesses and susceptible to injuries.

Below, you’ll get a chance to review sample quotes for some of the most popular dog and cat breeds for some pet-loving states.

Pricing Plans for Pet Wellness

We mentioned that the pet wellness plan offered by Embrace is nothing more than a budgeting tool that helps you pay for all the routine care treatments necessary to keep your pet’s health in check.

Many customers would argue whether this plan carries any value at all since you might end up not using all of the allowance available on it. The only thing that comes in handy with this plan is the $25 reward that you get on an annual level.

With that said, the three options that come included with this plan are the $250, the $450, and the $650 funds that don’t roll over to the next billing cycle. Embrace could do better than that by reimbursing the unused funds, at the least.

Discounts and Savings

When it comes to reducing the price of your policy’s monthly premium, Embrace provides some of the most valuable savings options among its competitors.

You can stack up to 25% maximum discount by using the following savings options:

  • 10% discount if you enroll multiple pets with Embrace;
  • 5% discount for military members (not applicable for customers in New York and Tennessee);
  • 10% discount as part of employee benefits. If your company or clinic is partnered with Embrace, you can use this discount in combination with the other to reach 25% off your premium (not available in New York, Tennessee, Florida, and North Dakota).

The Healthy Pet Deductible that we mentioned above is another way to reduce your pet insurance costs. Namely, if you don’t submit a claim during your entire billing cycle (a full year), your originally chosen deductible will automatically go down by $50 for your next year.

How Does Embrace Compare With Its Competitors?

Customer Reviews

To access and hear other customer experiences is crucial when deciding which pet insurance provider to go for.

There are thousands of customer testimonies prowling the internet, and we selected a few that we believe provide unbiased insight into genuine experiences with Embrace.

Positive Embrace Pet Insurance Reviews

Embrace processed my claim & the check was in my bank account in a few days. I really appreciate how quickly the emergency hospital faxed you the big bill for Bailey the same night they saw her. Then I was impressed how quickly Embrace answered letting me know you’d received my claim & it showed up in my bank account within a few days. That really helped a lot so I could get my large credit card bill paid from that emergency. I’m so glad I got your insurance when I adopted Bailey. It gives me peace of mind in scary emergencies like I had that day.

Patricia

It blows my mind to read so many negative reviews, particularly about Embrace’s responsiveness. I have had the exact opposite experience.

When a claim was declined, and I was pissed, I spoke to/exchanged emails with six people. I was definitely not pleasant; the Embrace staff always was. The claims I was upset about were declined,  but after all of the back-and-forth, I completely understood why. In addition, a permanent exclusion (pre-existing condition) became temporary after I provided documentation. Since then, a dental procedure was pre-approved and a claim I submitted was processed and paid within a week.

The best thing about Embrace, though, is the 24-hour helpline. I called very late on a Sunday night and spoke to someone within three minutes. I was given advice that was a) correct and b) soothing. That alone is worth the premium.

Julie F.

We got a new puppy a year ago. He is very athletic. We researched pet insurance (this was our first time). I have USAA insurance and they partner with Embrace. We selected the right coverage for us and have had great insurance for our dog, Finnigan. Finnigan has had three issues in the last year. The claims were turned around in 48 hours (2nd and 3rd). Online submission was seamless! We would recommend Embrace wholeheartedly!

MBG

My wife and Embrace saved the day! I said, “We don’t need insurance for a healthy, 3-month-old purebred, well-known breeder breed puppy”. “It’s a waste of money”. Boy was I wrong.

I was finally talked into it and so happy we chose Embrace. My 1½-year-old lab was diagnosed with an elevated liver count which if not treated now is life-threatening. After many tests, which Embrace covered, our vet and a few specialists agreed that biopsies were the only way to find his cure and treatment of action. I forwarded the estimate to Embrace, which was super easy by uploading the pdf, and within days they said what would be covered, which was everything. This procedure ran me well of $9,000! Not only did Embrace cover the promised 80%, but it was directly deposited within two days of my submission! USAA and Embrace haven’t ever let me down!

Negative Embrace Pet Insurance Reviews

Claims Not Processed – Money Down the Drain

The only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because the customer service was nice and I was not refused a refund. Otherwise, this was a complete waste of money, none of my claims were processed and no costs were ever applied toward my yearly deductible because they were “waiting” for more information from the veterinarian and I was never informed of any other way to get the claims properly processed. After a year of literally ZERO benefits from the near $500 policy investment, I was still responsible for all veterinarian bills in full so what’s the point of a pet insurance policy that never assists you in paying the vet bills?

Alexander Ryan

Not what it was. Look elsewhere.

They changed policy coverage. I used to rave about Embrace coverage. Now with modifications to hip dysplasia and being a lifelong ailment it really no longer provides the benefit for life-long illness and alternative care that is so beneficial.

I no longer recommend Embrace coverage to my large animal network of friends and family.

I used to be one of the Ambassadors for Embrace. Those days left once they changed policy coverage. It’s too bad as they used to be the best. Now, not so much!

They cover 12 weeks for alternative care now. Such as hydro, chiropractic, laser which are huge for hip dysplasia. The issue is that the condition never goes away and worsens but the coverage does forever!!!! They changed the policy after I had it for years. You are best exploring other providers as this change impacts our puppy family in a horrific and unpleasant way.

Deanne Wojtas Beeman

Conclusion

We hope that with this review, we brought you a bit closer to deciding whether Embrace is the right fit for you or not. Researching about what’s best for your furry “children” isn’t only smart and money-saving, but it also shows how deeply you care about them and their wellbeing.

With that said, we feel that Embrace is a decent choice regarding cost and coverage for pet health conditions. Their policy on pre-existing conditions is more relaxed than those of the competition and the flexibility of choosing the desired coverage makes it that more valuable.

We recommend that you dig even further and explore more pet insurance companies on our website. It’ll give you a better insight into everything that’s available to you, so you could plan your budget more effectively.

Embrace’s Alternatives

24PetWatch is a great alternative to Embrace if shorter waiting periods are what you’re looking for. With them, coverage for accidents starts on the day of enrollment, and coverage for illnesses starts only 3 days after your sign-up. What’s more, 24PetWatch processes claims with lightning-fast speed as well. Their coverage limits are flexible and you can choose the options that are most suitable to your unique situation.

We’re well aware that Embrace’s wellness plan is not the best one out there. That’s why we believe that SPOT might be a great alternative in this segment, as they offer not only one, but two preventive care tiers. Additionally, their traditional pet insurance options are extremely customizable which is great to tailor a reasonable price for your monthly premium.

Prudent Pet is another pet insurance company that is similar to Embrace but has excellent customer reviews, amazing discount options, and an affordable routine care plan. With no restrictions regarding pet’s age and no annual and lifetime limits, Prudent Pet is indeed a provider that shouldn’t be easily discarded. They’re quite new though and still haven’t implemented a mobile app to help with claim submission and tracking.

F.A.Q.

How can I acquire an Embrace pet insurance policy?

The first thing that we recommend you do is run a quote for your pet. If you’re satisfied with the coverage you’ll be getting and happy with the price of your monthly premium, you can freely proceed to pay for enrollment. You’ll need to enter all your pet’s information and provide Embrace with their medical/adoption records for the past 12 months.

Is canceling my Embrace pet insurance subscription easy and accessible?

All you need to do to cancel your Embrace pet insurance plan is email or phone them and you’ll be on the way out the door. If the 30-day free trial period hasn’t passed, they’ll even refund your enrollment premium. But remember that if you decide to enroll again in the future, the conditions from your previous enrollment will be considered pre-existing.

How does an Embrace pet insurance policy renew?

Policies from Embrace renew annually and automatically with no effort on your part. All you need to do to keep the process smooth is make sure your billing information is up to date.

Can I submit a claim from my past billing term if I already renewed my policy?

Yes, you can. You need to pay attention to do so within 60 days of the renewal date. This is extra convenient if you surpassed your previous annual claim limit because, at renewal, your chosen deductible and annual claim limit are reset so you can use them afresh.

Can I increase or decrease my existing Embrace pet insurance coverage?

Yes, you can do both whenever you wish. Decreasing annual deductibles, claim limits, and reimbursement rates doesn’t change anything within your coverage and waiting periods. However, increasing your coverage will result in resetting your waiting periods and conditions that were diagnosed prior to your increase will be considered pre-existing.
