More info

ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

Nothing deserves more protection than unconditional love. Bivvy takes up on that promise to deliver a pet insurance solution that’s accessible, affordable, and simple for every pet owner.

We say simple because Bivvy is quite different from other pet insurance companies. Its business model revolves around creating a user-friendly product that removes the complex choices other pet insurance providers impose on their customers.

To make things as stress-free as possible, Bivvy tailors custom-made pet insurance policies so the subscriber doesn’t have to make an overwhelming choice and later stress that they have chosen badly.

Many other pet insurance companies may cover more of your veterinary expenses but have expensive premiums, which is why so many pet owners get discouraged to insure their pets. Bivvy covers less in benefits and reimbursement but is much cheaper than traditional pet insurance.

These characteristics make Bivvy perfect for anyone who wants to provide medical protection for their pets without spending an entire fortune.

Continue reading this Bivvy pet insurance review to learn all about their pet insurance coverage and wellness care plan along with their pricing, exclusions, customer service, and much more.

Bivvy’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: CUMIS Insurance Society, Inc.
    • AM Best Rating: A
    • BBB Rating: N/A
  2. Exam period: Your pet doesn’t need a complete vet exam to become eligible for enrollment with Bivvy. All you have to do is fetch a free online quote from their website and sign up online. If it so happens that you’ve adopted your pet from a shelter that offers the Bivvy pet insurance, the process is a bit different, but the shelter team will guide you through it.
  3. Increase in monthly premium: Bivvy states that your premiums may increase at renewal due to your pet’s age, costs regarding the inflation of veterinary prices, and location change (note that Bivvy has different premiums based on the state where you reside). However, you should always be confident that Bivvy will never increase the price of your premium based on how many claims you submit to the insurance company.
  4. Claim submission time limit: You can submit your claims within 90 calendar days of the treatment date or the date listed on your veterinary service receipt. Please take this time limit into careful consideration since Bivvy reserves the right to deny your claim if you breach the 90-day timeframe.
  5. Claim processing times: Bivvy takes pride in quickly approving submitted claims. If you successfully submit every necessary document when making a claim, Bivvy will start the process of review within minutes (one business day at maximum). After reviewing your claim, Bivvy’s specialists will promptly notify you of its status and swiftly move forward with the reimbursement process.
  6. Waiting periods: Bivvy’s waiting periods are pretty complex. It all depends on the state of your residents which determines how long you’ll have to wait to get full coverage for accidents, illnesses, and orthopedic conditions. Accidents have a 14-day waiting period in general, except for Arizona which has only a 3-day accident waiting period. Illnesses vary between 14 and 30 days, depending on the state and so do orthopedic conditions. They can either have a 6-months waiting period or a 12-months one.
    • Accidents – 14 days (3 in Arizona);
    • Illnesses – 14 or 30 days depending on state;
    • Wellness – 1 day;
    • Orthopedic conditions – 6 or 12 months depending on the state.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with Bivvy is valid only in the United States, specifically in the states of AL, AZ, CO, CT, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, OH, OR, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, and WI. While they are constantly expanding to other states to ultimately cover the entire US, you can currently obtain Bivvy’s coverage in the mentioned states. However, your vet bills will be covered even if you travel to another US state that’s not on this list.
  8. Bilateral conditions are entirely covered by Bivvy. Most other pet insurance companies exclude coverage for conditions such as cruciate ligaments of knee conditions that affect both sides of a pet’s body, but that’s not the case with Bivvy.

Bivvy’s Insurance Plans

There’s one pet insurance plan offered by Bivvy covering unexpected accidents and illnesses. The coverage options that come with this plan aren’t customizable but vary depending on your state of residence.

While other pet insurance agencies offer flexible plans where you can customize your policy to better fit your needs, Bivvy’s pet insurance policies are already optimized to help pet families that can’t afford to pay large monthly premiums.

To be able to offer comprehensive pet coverage at low prices, Bivvy’s policies include low annual benefit limits, reimbursement of only 50%, and affordable deductibles that can either be annual or per claim. These options are always fixed for each state no matter the zip code, pet type, age, nor size.

For example, Texans will receive a Bivvy policy covering 50% of their vet bills up to a $2,000 annual limit for a deductible of $100 per approved claim.

The following are the minimum and maximum option ranges that Bivvy currently offers:

  • Annual benefit amounts: $1,000 – $5,000;
  • Lifetime benefit amount: $25,000;
  • Annual or pet-claim deductibles: $50 – $250;
  • Reimbursement percentage: 50%.

Another amazing characteristic about Bivvy is that they don’t impose lower and upper age requirements for cats and dogs. Every pet from birth onwards can be enrolled for a Bivvy policy.

Waiting periods for illnesses and orthopedic conditions are also different depending on the state and range from 14 to 30 days for illnesses and 6 to 12 months for orthopedic conditions. Accidents always have a waiting period of 14 days, except in the case of Arizona where the accident waiting period is only 3 days.

You can sign up for Bivvy’s pet coverage by fetching an online quote on their website. It is currently only available in the states of AL, AZ, CO, CT, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, NC, OH, OR, SC, TN, TX, UT, VA, and WI, but can be used throughout the entire USA in any licensed vet, emergency, or specialty clinic.

What’s Covered With a Bivvy Policy

Whenever you file a claim with Bivvy for reimbursement of your vet bills, you are obligated to pay your assigned deductible and the 50% coinsurance. After you submit all of the necessary documents to Bivvy (signed claim form, itemized invoice from the vet clinic, and your pet’s medical history), they will review them and reimburse you within 1-2 days.

One important thing to remember is that to be eligible for reimbursement, your medical bills need to be for a covered condition. The following list mentions the most important conditions, diagnostics, and fees that are covered by Bivvy:

  • Accidents – automobile accidents, poisoning, ingestion of foreign objects, gastric torsion, animal bites, dental trauma, cruciate ligament ruptures, bone fractures, burns, wounds, sprains, cuts, and much more;
  • Illnesses – digestive problems, diarrhea, vomiting, infections of the urinary tract, skin, eyes, and ears, heartworm, problems with the kidney or urethra, and much more;
  • Chronic conditions – diabetes, arthritis, epilepsy, allergies, asthma, heart disease, and more;
  • Congenital and hereditary conditions – hip and elbow dysplasia, cruciate ligament issues, knee conditions, eye conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts, nervous system defects, disorders with the liver or thyroid gland, respiratory issues, and more;
  • Cancer treatments that require radiotherapy and chemotherapy;
  • Orthodontic and endodontic treatments – accidental dental injuries that require root canal and crowns, facial and jaw trauma, dental disease such as periodontitis and gingivitis, and more;
  • Veterinary exam fees including all examinations, check-ups, consultations, health inspection, physical, office visits, after-hour fees, and more;
  • Surgery and hospitalization including post-procedure rehabilitative care;
  • Diagnostic services including laboratory examinations (blood panel, urinalysis, hematology), ultrasound, X-rays, MRIs, CT scans, and more;
  • Medical supplies including mobility devices, Elizabethan collar, bandages, splints, casts, and more;
  • Prescribed medications by a licensed veterinarian and approved by the FDA;
  • Medical waste disposal;
  • Euthanasia that is recommended by a veterinarian for humane reasons and the associated fees for cremation.

What’s Excluded From Bivvy’s Coverage

There are a number of conditions and medical procedures that aren’t included in Bivvy’s coverage. The company will not reimburse you for any of the items on the following list in order to maintain the affordability of their policy premiums and to protect their agency from liabilities.

  • Pre-existing conditions – illnesses and injuries that occur or continue to reoccur before the application date or within the waiting period;
  • Preventative care such as vaccinations, flea and tick control, spaying/neutering, grooming, and similar treatments (available as an optional add-on);
  • Microchipping;
  • Pet ambulance that isn’t due to an emergency;
  • Mobile veterinary travel fees;
  • Burial and other means of pet disposal other than cremation;
  • Boarding costs;
  • Costs for treating an injury or illness caused intentionally by you or a close member of your family, or due to severe neglect;
  • Costs for treating injuries or illnesses caused by commercial activities such as organized fighting, coursing, racing, personal protection, or similar activities;
  • Aesthetic, cosmetic, or elective treatments such as tail docking, declawing, ear cropping, anal gland expression, and other similar treatments;
  • Foods, vitamins, dietary supplements, grooming supplies, or bathing supplies;
  • Treatments related to complications due to breeding, pregnancy, queening, or whelping;
  • Experimental treatments, organ transplants, cloning, or cloning.

Policyholders should be aware that any pre-existing conditions that were excluded from their Bivvy policy but haven’t been observed for a period of 12 consecutive months with no obvious symptoms will be considered cured and included in the covered conditions in their Bivvy pet insurance policy.

Bivvy’s Wellness Plans

Bivvy pet insurance review wellness care featuring a girl holding a kitten

Each pet parent that is always ahead of their pet’s health and well-being and regularly takes them to routine checkups can take great advantage of the Bivvy Wellness Care plan.

Bivvy’s Wellness Care reimburses directly for any preventative care treatments such as tick prevention and shots, but also routine wellness visits.

This wellness plan is a great opportunity to ensure your fur family is always taken care of. It works on a benefits schedule, meaning that every benefit that comes on this plan has an annual limit.

Check out the following chart to understand all of the benefits of Bivvy’s Wellness Care package:

BenefitsWellness Care
Wellness examinations$40
Vaccinations –  Rabies$15
Other vaccinations$15
Flea, tick and, heartworm prevention$15
FeLV screen$15
Heartworm test$10
Microchip$20
ERD or urinalysis$15
Deworming$20
Total Annual Benefits$165

You should note that the Wellness Care plan doesn’t have any deductible or co-payment. You can only sign up for this plan when you’re acquiring your pet insurance policy and you cannot get it as a standalone option.

The Bivvy Wellness Care plan costs a flat fee of $9/month for all breeds of cats and dogs in all US states.

Extra Features – Bivvy Pet Credit™

Bivvy is the only pet insurance company that offers a feature that can help pet parents meet every need their furry children may have.

Bivvy Pet Credit™ is a loan that you can take to make sure your financial needs are maintained at a healthy level so you can pay for your pet whenever necessary.

You can apply for this pet credit within minutes and you can choose an amount ranging from $2,000 to $100,000, based on your credit score. You also don’t need to have Bivvy’s pet insurance to apply for this credit.

Ultimately, this pet credit isn’t limited only to cats and dogs but can be used for any type of pet. With it, you can pay the vet bills for your dog, buy pet food for your hamster, schedule dental cleaning and grooming for your cat, or simply buy a new cage and adequate equipment for your new parrot.

Bivvy’s Pricing Quotes

Bivvy takes a unique approach to pricing its accident and illness pet coverage plan. Their premiums have rounded prices that range from $9 to $15 per month depending on which US state you live in.

Your pet’s sex, gender, size, or age don’t factor in when determining your premium’s price. For example, if you live in Phoenix, Arizona, your policy premium will be $9/month no matter if you have a half-year-old kitten or a 16-year-old dog.

These cheap prices are a result of Bivvy’s limited pet coverage options. You can’t choose from multiple deductibles, reimbursement rates, nor annual claim benefits. You’ll be dedicated your custom policy options based, again, on the state of your residence.

Note that the rate of your premium may change over time. Increases may happen depending on your pet’s health condition, their age, the fluctuations in veterinary costs in your area, and if you change your home address from one state to another.

Discounts and Savings

Bivvy may offer premium discounts to the policyholders who meet certain conditions, according to their sample policy. These discounts may be modified or discontinued over time, but Bivvy will notify each affected policyholder upon 30 days via a written notice.

Additionally, Bivvy occasionally rewards its loyal customers with free brand merchandise such as pet leashes, shirts, educational items, or other promotional material.

There’s also the 30-day money-back guarantee that you can use to first-hand test Bivvy’s pet coverage and customer service. If you’re not satisfied with any of their terms and ways of service, you can cancel your policy and, provided that you haven’t submitted any claims within the first 30 days of your enrollment, Bivvy will issue a full refund of your first premium.

Unfortunately, Bivvy doesn’t offer a multiple pet discount currently, as opposed to many of its competitors. Other pet insurance agencies offer a 5%-10% discount on any additional pet’s premium that you sign up with them.

How Does Bivvy Compare With Its Competitors?

It’s time we put Bivvy up against three of the leading pet insurance companies currently on the market to recognize which do a better job regarding pet coverage plans, rating, age restrictions, claim processing, and more.

The charts below will help you evaluate which insurer provides more value for your buck by boosting your research time.

The three pet insurance providers that Bivvy compares to today are PetPremium, ASPCA Pet Insurance, and Hartville. They’re all amazing at what they do, providing unique pet coverage options while still being similar in their methods.

Bivvy vs. PetPremium

PetPremium is an experienced pet insurer that offers a tremendous amount of flexible benefit options that go from $2,500 to unlimited on an annual level.

Their waiting period for accidents is incredibly short – only 1 day, and they boast a convenient accident-only pet coverage plan that’s quite affordable. Let’s not forget the excellent rating they have with both the AM Best and the BBB and their 10% multi-pet discount.

Bivvy vs. ASPCA Pet Insurance

ASPCA Pet Insurance is the only pet insurance company in the United States that offers pet insurance coverage for horses.

There’s pretty much nothing that’s not covered by their accident and illness plan including instances such as alternative therapies, behavioral issues, and even veterinary exam fees. They’re also top-rated and impose no age limit restrictions for both cats and dogs.

Hartville is an ever-evolving brand that’s synonymous with quality pet insurance, always keeping up with new practices to provide pet coverage packed with all the amazing benefits every pet and pet owner need.

Hartville boasts one of the shortest waiting periods for orthopedic conditions such as ligament issues and disorders of the soft tissue of the knee. However, they don’t offer an unlimited option when annual benefits are concerned.

Customer Service

Bivvy isn’t as thoroughly developed as some of its competitors are regarding customer service. The company doesn’t implement a live chat tool, nor a 24/7 veterinary telephone line in order to make things easier for pet owners to get answers to their urgent questions about their pet’s medical situation.

The following are the communication channels that you can use to contact a Bivvy representative:

  • Phone:
    1-855-434-3744;
  • Address:
    CUMIS Insurance Society,
    Satellite Office at 34 Schroeder Court, Suite 330,
    Madison, WI 53711;
  • Email:
    team@bivvy.com.

Submitting claims with Bivvy is made easy by sending them a copy of your veterinary invoice through their online pet portal. You can also shoot them an email (team@bivvy.com).

Unfortunately, Bivvy doesn’t offer smartphone apps to make using their services more convenient when you’re on the go. This is one of their biggest disadvantages.

Customer Reviews

We believe that, in order to form a truly unbiased personal insight into how a company operates, a peek into reviews that real customers provide all over the internet is a must.

In this section, we’re including several genuine experiences with Bivvy’s services so you can shape a clear picture of whether this company is a hit or miss for you.

Positive Bivvy Pet Insurance Reviews

This policy is $10/mo and has saved me $156 so far. I’ve only had the policy for 3 months. It has paid for itself and then some. I’m not someone who has a lot of disposable income, I live paycheck to paycheck and a surprise vet bill is always hard for me. This is a reimbursement type of deal, so at least I know I’m getting half back of what I paid. It’s an affordable option.

Obviously, there are more expensive insurance options that pay upfront or reimburse for more, but if you can’t afford the $45-100 monthly premiums for those, they are not good. The claims process is seamless and quick. I usually see the funds deposited in 7 days’ time. I recommend this to anyone.

Amber Riley

I checked out many pet insurances because we have 4 dogs and a cat. Bivvy is by far the best for the money. I also like the ability to add on a wellness plan and keep the insurance affordable. I have not had a vet visit yet so don’t know if they put in a claim or if I have to pay upfront and get the claim reimbursed. I’ll add to this review once I know.

Melodie

I purchased Bivvy Pet Insurance less than a year ago for my 14-year-old dog …after my regular well-known pet insurance had quoted their new annual premium well over $1200. Bivvy’s premiums were only $19 per month including wellness care. Boy am I glad I switched. Since then, I have had four unexpected visits to the Vet; and Bivvy has reimbursed me for three out of those (the fourth one I knew probably would not clear).

They are very professional, easy to sign up for, easy to put in a claim; quick to respond and approve claims; quick to pay out. I am THRILLED and so thankful!! I know I will have some financial assistance if anything happens to my furry baby girl. Thank you Bivvy!!

Judith

I’ve been a Bivvy customer for over a year now. They’ve been great from the start. Claims were generally paid quickly although this last time was incredibly slow. After many calls, I was able to get help from the CS manager. This does prompt me to leave fewer than 5 stars, however. Particularly because they are now offering direct deposit which is a smart move. Better for customers and better for Bivvy. It is with a very heavy heart that I have to cancel my policy.

My beloved Great Dane Maya passed away unexpectedly. She had no long-term illness that we saw coming. By the time Lyme symptoms showed it was too late. She was our family member, beloved friend, and protector. She saved my life from a bear attack. My heart is broken. 💔 Thank you Bivvy for being there when we needed you.

Negative Bivvy Pet Insurance Reviews

We joined Bivvy about a month ago for our 10-year-old dog, and over two weeks after we joined (at this point we were able to go to the vet if needed) and had to bring my dog to the vet. Bivvy refused to accept this claim ($300+) and said it was a preexisting condition when it was not. We canceled and are unhappy and I am sad that my dog is no longer insured, however, this was hard to deal with.

Willow

I’ve been trying to call Bivvy for 6 weeks and again today. NO RETURN CALLS! My Pets have been signed up for several months. Sent in my first invoice and it was denied. In my profile, it states I received an explanation, which I have not. Bivvy is looking more scammy by the minute. I suggest don’t stop here, there are better/reliable services for your pet than Bivvy.

Sheila Jackson-Sears

Right now I’m super dissatisfied with Bivvy. My dog has become very ill and I turned in claims 7 days ago and they are still not paid. Good luck calling, they never answer the phone and if they get back to you they are not helpful. Bivvy said that Cunamutual pays the claims and they don’t know when my claim will be paid and Bivvy never offered to help me. This has been hard for me and my family, emotionally and financially.

Penny Walker

This was not very easy using your service. It really didn’t go into detail about what I can expect from your service and I’m starting to have second thoughts. I haven’t even received a policy number. All I have is a booklet and a survey from you asking how it was? I feel like I should have given 1 star but I did like your prices but I would have been willing to spend more if it gave me a little more peace of mind???

Lorna

The website needs some work. I tried to add an animal, and it accepted my entries. Then, after I was completely finished, including payment, I only had one pet policy. I had to go back and do it all over again for the second pet. There was also some problem with payment not being accepted. I got no error messages, but could not submit my entry. I had to redo the entire application to get that through. I was working on my tablet. When I redid it on my desktop computer, it worked.

Peggy

Conclusion

To summarize, we first want to point out that Bivvy is excellent for everyone out there who’s looking for a decent pet insurance policy that covers the most important pet medical conditions and has a monthly fee similar to that of a single happy meal.

What’s more, Bivvy is extremely fast when it comes to processing your claims and repaying the money that you spent on pet veterinary care. They don’t charge an administrative fee every month and don’t have age restrictions for pets.

Then, there’s their affordable Wellness Care package that takes care of the core preventative care treatments that your pet needs in order to always stay in great shape.

However, Bivvy only reimburses 50% of your veterinary costs and that’s up to a low annual limit. That’s how they are able to provide comprehensive pet coverage at affordable monthly premiums. Moreover, the pet insurer has waiting periods that are quite long and doesn’t even offer a mobile app for easier policy management.

Anyway, if you’re fine with everything that we’ve covered above about Bivvy, go ahead and fetch your free quote. But if you’re up for something more traditional, we’re covering every pet insurance company out there at ProtectMyPaws. Check them out and learn more about what each of them offers.

Bivvy’s Alternatives

If you’re searching for unlimited annual benefits to remove the stress that comes with high vet bills, we suggest that you take a look at Lemonade. Unlike Bivvy’s low annual benefit limits, Lemonade provides unlimited payouts for their thorough accident and illness coverage that is not the cheapest but can be lowered by the many discount options that they offer. The use of AI-powered technology enables Lemonde’s customers to experience a seamless, straightforward, and reliable service.

While Bivvy requires you to provide 50% of the costs of a vet bill yourself, Figo requires none. They cover all of your medical expenses without any annual or lifetime benefit limits. You can even choose from the many deductible options to tailor the price of your monthly premium. Figo implements a very short waiting period for accidents as well. This top-notch pet insurer is one of the highest-rated options on our website.

Lastly, 24PetWatch comes in to save the day from long waiting periods, which is the case with Bivvy. 24PetWatch has waiting periods that are so short that you will barely even notice how fast they pass. They process claims and make reimbursement in a matter of days as well, but Bivvy can stand shoulder to shoulder with them in that regard.

F.A.Q.

What if I don’t know my pet’s breed? Will I be able to still sign up for Bivvy’s pet insurance plan?

Not knowing your pet’s breed is definitely not a problem when you’re enrolling with Bivvy. If you’re enrolling a dog, all you have to do is choose the “mixed-breed” option that matches the weight of your dog. When it comes to cats, it doesn’t even matter what your cat’s breed is. Is it possible to gift pet insurance to a friend or a family member with Bivvy?

Yes, surprising your loved ones with a Bivvy pet insurance policy is absolutely possible. How to renew my Bivvy pet insurance policy?

You can rest assured knowing that your Bivvy policy automatically renews every year. All you need to do is pay your premiums in a timely manner. Otherwise, Bivvy might stall your coverage and if you continue paying after a certain period, you’ll have a coverage gap which will entail every previously observed condition to become pre-existing thus excluded from your coverage.

Does Bivvy offer a direct vet bill payment option?

At the moment, no, Bivvy won’t be able to pay your veterinarian directly for the medical procedures they perform on your pet. They can only reimburse you via check or make a direct deposit into your bank account.
