More info

ProtectMyPaws is an independent publication with no ties with companies mentioned on the site. We don’t accept free products in exchange for glowing reviews. Instead, we report our own findings to help you make an informed decision.

Deciding on the best pet health insurance company for your pet becomes a lot easier when the company you’re interested in comes with an endorsement from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® (ASPCA®). This humane organization is the first in North America to establish anti-animal-cruelty programs nationwide and to this day actively engages in protecting and aiding animals in need throughout the United States.

In 2006, Crum & Forster® struck a strategic partnership with the ASPCA® and introduced ASPCA® Pet Health Insurance, becoming their parent company and underwriter.

Both companies’ backgrounds and experiences in their respective fields make ASPCA Pet Health Insurance a carefully designed product that truly understands what pets and pet owners require from a pet insurance policy.

The company is one of the top pet insurers out there to offer comprehensive coverage for illnesses and injuries concerning cats and dogs and some additional features designed to enhance their happiness and wellbeing.

In this ASPCA Pet Insurance review, we’ll take a look at their offers, as well as tackle questions such as price and coverage comparisons with other similar companies, and reviews from real pet parents.

ASPCA’s Key Attributes

  1. Underwriter: United States Fire Insurance Company
    • AM Best Rating: A
    • BBB Rating: A+
  2. Exam period: ASPCA doesn’t commit their clients to take complete veterinary exams for their pet prior to obtaining a pet insurance policy through them;
  3. Increase in monthly premium: The price of your monthly premium with ASPCA will increase over time as your pet gets older and to match the current costs for veterinary treatments in your area;
  4. Claim submission time limit: You have 270 days from the date of the veterinary procedure to submit your claim for revision;
  5. Claim processing times: Submitted claims are processed by ASPCA within 30 days or less. We’ve noticed that these times average to about 14 to 16 business days, although after the Covid-19 pandemic, they might have increased a bit;
  6. Waiting periods: Pet illnesses with ASPCA have an average waiting period when compared to other companies in the same industry, however, the waiting period for injuries is quite longer than the competition. Surprisingly, the waiting period for orthopedic conditions is one of the lowest out there:
    • Accidents – 14 days;
    • Illnesses – 14 days;
    • Wellness – 1 day;
    • Cruciate ligament instances – 14 days.
  7. Pet insurance coverage with ASPCA is valid for traveling together with your pet throughout the entire US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands;
  8. Bilateral conditions with ASPCA are covered except those considered ligament and knee conditions including ligament, meniscus, patella, and knee soft tissue disorders.

ASPCA’s Insurance Plans

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers one plan encompassing a complete coverage for illnesses, injuries, and accidents for cats and dogs – the Complete Coverage℠ plan.

This plan covers everything that can unexpectedly come up when your pets get sick or hurt. It includes a variety of issues related to accidents, illnesses, hereditary conditions, behavioral issues, and much more. The related diagnostics and exam fees for every covered condition are also included.

The Complete Coverage℠ plan is quite flexible in providing various options for different annual deductibles, annual coverage limits, and reimbursement percentages which can all be tailored to adjust the price of your monthly premium. You can review them below:

  • Annual coverage limits: $3,000, $5,000, $7,000, $10,000, and $15,000;
  • Annual deductibles: $100, $250, and $500;
  • Reimbursement percentages: 70%, 80%, and 90%.

The insurance coverage that you get from ASPCA works with any licensed veterinarian and emergency clinic in the US, as well as Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands.

Before the coverage goes into full effect, you have to wait 14 days whether your situation is related to a pet illness, injury, or an orthopedic condition.

A great thing about this plan is that it doesn’t impose a maximum age restriction for any pet, although pets need to be at least 6 weeks old in order to be eligible for enrollment.

What’s Covered With an ASPCA’s Policy

We’ve combed the base ASPCA Pet Health Insurance policy through and through and we’ve discovered that their coverage is drafted in great detail.

What’s Excluded From ASPCA’s Coverage

Just like every other pet insurance company, ASPCA Pet Health Insurance lays down a number of exclusions in order to protect itself from liabilities and buyer’s abuse.

Extra Features

Accident-Only Coverage

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance helps every pet parent by offering an affordable solution to protect their furry children from the most unexpected emergencies. Their accident-only plan is a cheap way to provide some cushion whenever your pet gets hurt.

We went through every detail of the accident-only policy and this is what we’ve discovered regarding the benefits that come by acquiring one:

  • Expenses for diagnosing and treating injuries that are a result of an accident;
  • IV fluids and medications;
  • Medical supplies (bandages, casts, splints);
  • CT scans, X-rays, and MRIs;
  • Consultation for poison control;
  • Prescription foods used to treat a condition;
  • Supplements used to treat a condition;
  • Prescription medications;
  • Stem cell therapy;
  • Surgery and hospitalization;
  • Tooth extractions;
  • Diagnostics, consultations, laboratory tests, and exam fees for the related accidents;
  • Alternative therapy;
  • Expenses for end of life as a result of an accident.

Even though a microchip isn’t considered an emergency situation, this plan provides coverage for the implementation of one.

Every illness and all the other instances mentioned in the “excluded items” section below aren’t covered with the accident-only pet policy.

To acquire this plan or get more information about its deductibles, reimbursement, and claim payout options, you must call ASPCA Pet Health Insurance directly.

Insurance for Pet Horses

ASPCA Pet Health insurance is one of the very few companies that offer insurance policies for pet horses. They have two insurance plans covering colic, injuries, and illnesses, and two preventive care plans for horses.

Just like the accident-only coverage for cats and dogs, to acquire any of the horse insurance or wellness plans and learn more about their limits and payout conditions, you need to call ASPCA’s customer support directly.

Colic + Accidents Coverage

The first base coverage for horses aims to take care of veterinary expenses for colic procedures and treatments for accidents.

  • Covered items:
    • Expenses for diagnosing and treating colic;
    • Expenses for diagnosing and treating injuries that are a result of an accident;
    • IV fluids and medications;
    • Medical supplies (bandages, casts, splints);
    • Consultation for poison control;
    • Prescription medications;
    • Tooth extractions;
    • Implementation of a microchip;
    • Euthanasia for humane reasons.
  • Exclusions:
    • Pre-existing conditions;
    • Illnesses and chronic conditions;
    • Alternative therapy;
    • Orthopedic conditions;
    • Behavioral therapy;
    • Breeding and pregnancy-related issues;
    • Elective and cosmetic procedures such as castration, bone chip or cyst surgery, neurectomy, laryngoplasty, tail docking, and more;
    • Cremation or burial;
    • Organ transplantation;
    • Food and dietary supplies;
    • Grooming, toys, training devices, etc.

Colic + Accidents + Illnesses Coverage

This extension of the Colic + Accidents plan for horses includes coverage for illnesses as well. Every inclusion and exclusion is the same as demonstrated in the section above, except for new instances for covered illnesses.

That being said, with this plan you’ll get coverage for any veterinarian expenses for diagnosing and treating your horse as a result of an illness. Cancer treatments accompanied by chemotherapy and radiation are also added to this policy.

Routine Preventive Care

Similar to the wellness options for cats and dogs, the Preventive Care plans for horses are designed as riders to any of the two base coverage plans mentioned above.

You can sign up for the Routine or the Platinum preventive care plan when enrolling for the base insurance policy for horses, or whenever you renew it.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance includes a variety of benefits that are included on these two plans. Here’s how much reimbursement you can get for each of the added benefits on an annual level:

BenefitsRoutine Preventive CarePlatinum Preventive Care
Wellness Exams$50$75
Dental Floating$75$200
Blood Exam$0$25
Coggins Exam$0$25
Urinalysis$0$25
WNV or EEE/WEE/VEE$25$25
Tetanus or Rabies$25$25

Maximum Annual Benefits$175$425

Note: You may change or cancel your preventive care coverage only at renewal. Until then, you must pay your preventive care monthly premium together with your base coverage premium.

ASPCA’s Pricing Quotes

After some elaborative research, we concluded that ASPCA Pet Health Insurance keeps its prices in the average spectrum compared to their competition.

After you decide on your chosen deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual claim limit, you’d need to factor in your pet’s age, breed, size, and location so you could determine the price of your monthly premium.

Given that, we’ve noticed that the average price for a young mixed-breed dog is about $40 per month, and young domestic cats have premiums with a price of about $20 per month on average.

Note that your original premium’s price will increase as your pet gets older and with the changes of the veterinary costs in your area.

Pricing Plans for Pet Wellness

We’ve covered both the Basic and the Prime Wellness plans above and witnessed everything that you get by acquiring one of them as a rider to your basic coverage.

Their prices are always fixed and amount to $9.95 per month for the Basic Preventive Care plan and $24.95 per month for the Prime Preventive Care plan.

Discounts and Savings

The pet insurer offers several ways that you can use to bring down the price of your monthly premium and save in the long run.

By opting for a multi-pet insurance policy by ASPCA Pet Health Insurance you can save 10% on each additional pet that you enroll on the same policy.

If your employer or organization offers the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance services as an employee or member benefit, you can score an additional 10% off on your monthly premium.

By setting your billing to be annual instead of a monthly one, you can avoid paying the $2.00 monthly fee that comes with the monthly billing payment method. That way you can save $24 annually.

Lastly, if you aren’t satisfied with how ASPCA Pet Health Insurance are handling their advertised services, you can ask for a full refund within 30 days from the day of your enrollment.

How Does ASPCA Compare With Its Competitors?

In this section, we’re putting ASPCA against some of their top competitors to see how their coverage, claims, restrictions, and all the other important features stack.

We believe this is crucial to better understand the value of a service and will shorten the time you need to research and decide on what’s best for you and your pet.

Nationwide, Trupanion, and Embrace are leaders in the pet insurance industry and take a huge chunk of the total pet owners who decide to provide protection for their pets. Below, we can see how ASPCA compares to all three.

ASPCA vs. Nationwide

Nationwide is the first pet insurer in the country. They are trusted far and wide, and just like ASPCA Pet Health Insurance that offers coverage for horses, Nationwide is the only company in the US that’s willing to protect exotic animals.

Their strongest assets are their all-inclusive coverage for bilateral conditions and the ability to have valid travel insurance when you take your pet to travel anywhere in the world.

Below you can read some eye-opening positive and negative reviews about ASPCA Health Pet Insurance.

Positive ASPCA Pet Insurance Reviews

Grateful for the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance

I needed healthy insurance for my aging dog. So I picked ASPCA because of their affiliation with rescuing and saving animals. I have donated over the years to this organization, as well as others dedicated to saving all animals. It was easy to sign up and I chose a plan that fits my dog’s needs. Thanks for the help!

Gayle Collins

Easy access to Insurance for my Pet & Great Service

I am a new client. ASPCA was a recommendation from my new vet. I went online & read all the information provided & decided I would like to insure my new puppy. It was really easy to request coverage via my computer. The next day I received a call from ASPCA. The agent was very professional & friendly. She reviewed the policy & procedures with me. She answers all my questions. I was very impressed with your service.

Deborah Rinaldi

Great Pet Insurance

This was super simple to set up! I have two new puppies that I adopted through a shelter and wanted to make sure that I provide the best care possible for them, so getting pet insurance is a must. My last dog got cancer out of nowhere and got really sick. I did not have any pet insurance and it cost me thousands of dollars. They offer a bunch of different plans and prices that will fit any budget. We get health insurance for ourselves and loved ones so why aren’t you getting it for your beloved pet. It will save you so much money in the long run. This is a great pet insurance to have.

Elphie

A well-rounded pet insurance plan

We shopped around for pet insurance and narrowed our search to about 6 companies and plans. In comparing all side by side, the ASPCA plan had the most benefits for the best price and also didn’t feel like we were paying for things that we really didn’t need. I am happy we were able to include a wellness plan and still keep the cost affordable.

Lindsay Jones

Negative ASPCA Pet Insurance Reviews

Their services have declined. I’ve been a member for years, I’m on week six of waiting for my claim. I was just told by customer service to “give it another week or so”, it’s time to shop around for other insurance. It should not take this long to reimburse customers who pay on time, every single month.

Beth Shaffer

Look elsewhere for Supportive, Transparent Pet Insurance

I have been an ASPCA customer for about six months now. While I cannot point to any specifically fraudulent or grossly negligent conduct, this is not a company I would recommend to anyone. Be aware that ASPCA is underwritten by another company, Crum & Forster, which causes information gaps and discrepancies in how claims are processed. In addition, CF construes their coverage and policy VERY narrowly, and, at least in our case, has already denied multiple claims that, under a plan reading of the policy, should be covered.

Finally, their backlog of claims processing, refusal to follow through or communicate regarding vet correspondence, and exceptionally long wait and response times for customer service reps is unacceptable.

A.S.

Your customer service agents have always been helpful, but I do not like your policy about canceling the preventive plan without having to cancel the whole insurance. I was initially told I could do this anytime during the year, but later told I had to wait till October when the whole policy was up. I am on a limited budget and cannot work since the outbreak.

Teresa Glass

Conclusion

Let’s end this ASPCA Pet Insurance review with a quick summary.

Throughout our research, we discovered that what really makes ASPCA a quality partner of every pet parent is its longevity, expertise, and stability. When it comes to providing what’s best for animals, the partnership they have with the ASPCA keeps their beliefs in check.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance is both an underwriter and an agency, hence they understand the best what it means to cover everything from the technology and the business development to the veterinary coverage and claims segment.

Besides the comprehensive coverage, the company’s biggest strengths are their coverage for exam fees, short waiting periods for orthopedic conditions, no maximum age restrictions for pets, and pet insurance coverage for horses.

A couple of downsides are that ASPCA Pet Insurance doesn’t have an unlimited claim payout option and they impose some exclusions for bilateral conditions.

To discover more similar pet insurance providers, feel free to browse around ProtectMyPaws.

ASPCA’s Alternatives

We suggest that you take a look at 24PetWatch if time is of extreme value to you. The company has some of the shortest waiting periods and fastest claim processing times among similar companies in the niche. Your coverage with 24PetWatch is immediately available for accidents and goes into full effect 3 days after enrollment for illnesses.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance wellness plans are amazing regarding preventive care for your pets, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing better out there. Banfield Pet Hospital is an alternative to pet insurance, specializing specifically in routine care. They cover everything from pre-existing conditions to unlimited office visits. Additionally, they have no waiting periods regardless of the condition you want treatment for.

Figo is our third choice as an adequate alternative to ASPCA Pet Health Insurance, especially because of their unlimited claim benefits option, the short accident period, and the ability to get a full payout for your vet bill. Figo offers an option for 100% reimbursement where you don’t have to participate with any copayment. Their deductibles are extremely customizable as well.

F.A.Q.

How will I receive my reimbursement from ASPCA Pet Health Insurance?

Your reimbursement will automatically be delivered to you by mail in the form of a check. If you want a faster, more seamless reimbursement, you can sign up for direct deposit, and get your money back right into your bank account.

How many claims am I allowed to submit per a single billing period?

The number of claims you can submit to ASPCA Health Insurance isn’t restricted. You can ask for reimbursement for all of your pet’s veterinary treatments, but you need to remember to submit every claim within 270 days from the date of your veterinary visit.

What are the pet insurance plans available through ASPCA Pet Health Insurance?

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance offers a comprehensive pet insurance plan called the Complete Coverage℠ plan suitable for all breeds of dogs and cats. They also have an accident-only plan and two preventive care tiers to cover all routine needs of your pet. Additionally, ASPCA Pet Health is one of the very few companies that has a pet insurance plan for horses.

How can I cancel my ASPCA Pet Health Insurance policy?

You can perform a next-day cancellation of the ASPCA Pet Health Insurance program depending on the status of your ongoing claims. The insurer also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee which you can use to get a full refund on your first monthly premium only if you haven’t submitted any claims during this period.

Does ASPCA Pet Health Insurance cover professional training for behavioral disorders for my dog?

Training for behavioral disorders is a bit different than behavioral therapy, which is covered by ASPCA Pet Health Insurance. However, the company doesn’t fully cover training for behavioral disorders. To get coverage for this instance, your pet must be checked by a veterinarian and issued a written referral to a certified applied animal behaviorist.
